2012 NFL Free Agency: Previewing the Seattle Seahawks

Alright, everybody, get your flu shots. I've been trying to fight one this weekend, and it has been downright miserable. This has been a NN PSA!

So for my last article, I got in a little bit of hot water when I said nice things about Lance Kendricks. I will admit that I probably over-did it, but I still think that he is a bright star for that team. He also can't catch, sooo....

Anyway, this just means for today's post about the Seattle Seahawks, I'm going to be particularly tepid about everybody. Here it goes!

The Seahawks have a few pressing issues this offseason, one of which is what to do about that all-together average running back they have in Marshawn Lynch. Is he a guy they want to sign long-term? Totally replace? Or perhaps the prudent answer might be to Franchise him.

Another big question for the Seahawks is what to do with the QB position. I think most people would agree that Tarvaris Jackson is not the man for this team's future. What with the Matt Flynns of Free Agency coming up (Miami not withstanding), Seattle may try to make a move on a FA QB. In fact, because Seattle has an odd draft position (either 11 or 12), they may be forced to look to Free Agency for their QB needs.

Seattle may want to look to FA for a couple of other needs as well. For the most part, I think Seattle is pretty set on defense. Most of their question marks come on the offensive side of the ball. In fact, in a lot of ways, the Seahawks remind me of the recent 49ers these last couple of years: excellent, and perhaps underrated, defense coupled with a mediocre offense. Too bad they don't have a Jim Harbaugh to ride in and fix it all (lol college coach Pete Carroll in the NFL).

Digression aside, the Seahawks could stand to improve their pass rush. Securing a DE or OLB in Free Agency may do just that.

Star-divide

Unrestricted Free Agents: QB Charlie Whitehurst, RB Justin Forsett, RB Marshawn Lynch, FB Michael Robinson, TE John Carlson, OL Paul McQuistan, DE Raheem Brock, DE Red Bryant, DE Anthony Hargrove, DE Jimmy Wilkerson, LB Heath Farwell, LB David, Hawthorne, LB Leroy Hill, LB Matt McCoy, LB David Vobora, S Atari Bigby.

Restricted Free Agents: OL Mike Gibson, CB Roy Lewis, K Steven Hauschka

Exclusive Rights Free Agents: DT Clinton McDonald, CB Kennard Cox

Did you just call Lynch an average RB?

Compared to Gore he is =)

I know you're being tounge-and-cheek

but not one NFL franchise would take Gore over Lynch.

Indeed.

Lynch isn’t as amazing as people think he is though. But yes, everyone in the NFL would take him over Gore at this point.

by Odekerk on Feb 12, 2012 1:27 PM PST up reply actions

do people think he's amazing?

People acknolwedge a few of his amazing runs, but I think most see him for what he is: a solid, balanced, sometimes explosive starting RB.

playing for pay

I have to say, I would be very curious to see how well he plays if he gets a big contract. This struck me as a bit of a contract push performance.

by David Fucillo on Feb 12, 2012 10:27 AM PST up reply actions

I didn't see that at all.

I just think the offensive line started doing a better job of opening up holes for him as the season wore on. Last season he didn’t get the ball as much and wasn’t as effective because the line wasn’t as good. The line is young and improving so it shouldn’t be a problem moving forward. He always seems to run the same way.

Of course

he trimmed down, got into shape because he knows this next contract may be his last. But there is little evidence that Lynch will go Baron Davis on the Hawks upon getting a new deal, particularly because its not guaranteed like the NBA and MLB.

by salary_cap on Feb 12, 2012 12:02 PM PST up reply actions

good point

And Baron Davis really did take not giving a crap to a whole new level.

by David Fucillo on Feb 12, 2012 12:20 PM PST up reply actions

Oh come on now

Just because he’s pulling up 4 feet behind the 3 at the top of the key and turning to jog before it hits the rim doesn’t …. mean… err… well.. maybe.. ok — he didn’t take a dump at center court — that has to count for something right?

I agree.

I’m very curious to see if he was just pushing extra hard for the contract and how he’ll carry over his play.

by Odekerk on Feb 12, 2012 1:28 PM PST up reply actions

Gotta disagree.

I’m wary about signing Lynch to the big bucks but if he fails I seriously doubt it will be because of lack of motivation. The only difference between Lynch now and in 2010 was that the run-blocking finally gave him a chance this season. He’s always run hard.

See the above two paragraphs.

In which I say that “I’m going to be particularly tepid about everybody.” Hence the average RB thing.

Anyways looking at the Seahawks FA list

Looks like RB will be an issue for them coming into the draft and FA …they should take a look at LaMichael James (assuming he’s in the draft right?)

Why?

They already have Leon Washington who is probably what LaMichael James can ever hope to become.

Easy Answer

The Broncos should… He’d be a perfect complement to their starter.

I think their secondary should also be mentioned.

Both their starting corners and starting safeties are all very good and young. One of the best secondaries in football. Scary to think we’ll have to play them twice next year, and for multiple years after. Also, Sidney Rice will be coming back from being injured most of this season. Just as likely to get injured again next season though, glad we didn’t overpay him in FA like they did.

However, Baldwin and Tate aren’t anything to sneeze at. I also think Seattle is one of the places Peyton might go to. I would like it to be honest, we’d hopefully have some REAL competition within the division. Tired of most of our division games the past decade being played to see who sucks less, not who is better. I also can’t stand Peyton, so I’d have a real reason to actually dislike the Seahawks.

by Odekerk on Feb 12, 2012 1:33 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, their secondary is pretty solid and young enough that they can be an elite group in, well, maybe even next year. I only didn’t mention them because I was mainly focusing on their needs going into FA rather than their strengths. You raise a good point. Except for the can’t stand Peyton thing. He seems like a cool guy.

Ive always liked this guy, even when he was with Green Bay..
I wouldnt mind him on the niners..

by sundaysfinest on Feb 12, 2012 5:32 PM PST via iPhone app reply actions

Meh... I would not build my team around him

but he is a good stop gap. I think Lynch over performed this year, and we will probably never see another year like this. He does have heart and runs hard. In his prime Gore was a far better back, but Gore is no longer in his prime.

If I were Pete I would get some class… er… I mean I would try and sign him for a two year deal so that he stays hungry and the signing bonus isn’t that big.

The previous GM ( Tim Ruskell ) didn't draft well & relied heavily on FA pick-ups. Which didn't work either.

As a result when Carroll & Schnider took-over 2 years ago the team was old, over-paid, and devoid of any pro-bowl level players. Carroll and Schnider have done an amazing job of stocking the roster with young talent . Big, fast, talented kids that will grow-up together and be the core of this team for years to come. A couple areas still need to be addressed such as improved pass-rush and QB of the future. These guys have shown they will leave no stone unturned in their search of talent, and I have 100% confidence they will find their players. Congratulations 49ers on a great season ! And here’s to the NFC west putting the boots to the east in 2012 !
