Free Agency Deals

Top priority:

On Defense

- Re-sign CB Carlos Rogers to a 3-4 year deal. I'm pretty sure this will be a formality. Solid corner, at 31, he's in his prime.

- Franchise Tag S Dashon Goldson. If we offer him a long-term contract we won't have enough cap room to re-sign other free agents or pay our own draft picks.

On Offense

- Re-sign QB Alex Smith to a 4-5 year deal. Best season he's ever had. This should also be a formality.

- Re-sign WR Josh Morgan. Shame he got injured, I know his stats weren't 'eye-catching' but he's shown alot of promise. Solid #2 or #3.

Special Teams

- Re-sign KR/PR Ted Ginn Jr. In my opinion, Ginn's one of the best returners in the game.

- Re-sign Blake Costanzo to a long-term contract. Oustanding special teamer.

Free Agency signings.

Top priority:

On Offense

- Sign WR Dwayne Bowe/Stevie Johnson to a long-term contract. Both are relatively young, can stretch the field and are big-bodied targets (6"2) Alex Smith desperately needs. Stevie Johnson's a SF native, surely he'd want to come back to the Bay.

Other notable free agents I would like to see come to the Bay:

G Carl Nicks. He's a franchise O-Lineman, but he'd cost big bucks.

CB Brandon Carr. Would be a nice pick-up to add depth.

OLB/DE Mario Williams. I'm sure the Texans will re-sign him, however, the prospect of him playing opposite Aldon Smith would make our defense literally unstoppable.

Can't wait til' Free Agency starts! ( March 13th )

Thanks for reading.

Franchising Goldson would strap the Niners more as far as the cap goes. Playing on a 1year franchise deal would make it more difficult to sign others. Signing some one to a longer deal and extending the contract out over the coarse of some years would lower that cap space for a curtain year. I believe that’s how it would work ? Hopefully some one else will chime in if I’m wrong and has a better understanding of the salary cap rules?

I think the bigger problem is that Goldson is going to be looking for $7-8 million per year...

Since we have no safety depth and can’t afford to let Goldson walk, we bring him back under the franchise tag which gives us 1 year to get his replacement ready. Basically, that means this year we will have Goldson and a rookie at FS and next year the rookie steps in. There’s no way we can sign Goldson long term and still retain Rodgers; we can have one or the other on a long term deal and the CB franchise tag is over $10m.

4-5 years for Smith? Maybe 1-3, that sounds more like it. I’d sign Smith to a 1 yr guaranteed 6.5 mil. Let Goldson walk, bring in a rookie or sign a free agent at safety. Free agent guard, Costanzo, Morgan, and that would wrap up free agency. Move Crabtree, a 4th for a 2nd, to Jets, Dolphins, Texans, or Cowboys, draft Osemele from ISU, Boykins

I'd go 2-3

at least two years so there’s the option of keeping or trading him after next year

I'm not an Alex Smith appologist. I'm an Alex hater hater.

Rogers, Goldson, Mario Williams, Brandon Carr

Get all of them signed to multi-year deals, then sign Morgan and give Alex 2 years… dont need anything else, because who needs an offense with a defensive of those proportions, no team will score, ever. And we have Akers so we can win all our games 3-0 or 6-0 going 16-0 on the season and into the playoffs winning it all to the Niners 6th ring.

You heard it here first!

Brandon Carr wouldn't be "depth."

He’d be a starter that would demand starter money.

not bad

I agree with others that Smith should be 2-3 years, not 4-5. Hard call on Goldson – would like to see him back for a reasonable amount, but I think he’s looking to break the bank. Definitely would like to see a Free Agent WR – that’s go to be our biggest hole right now.

If you don't like Brandon Medders you're not a true fan.

Sounds great, but.....

This sounds a lot like Madden math. Keeping Rogers, Goldson, and getting Williams to sign would no doubt take us over the cap. After the years both DB’s had, they would want a significant pay raise. Add to that the amount it would take just for Williams’ agent to answer that phone call would be astronomical. I agree Alex should be re-signed (God, perish the thought of me saying that). However, I also agree with some of the others observations that it should be for only a couple years at best. Not the 4-5 you mentioned. But, I digress….. I know that Bowe is a high priority on many fans list. Yet, as with Jackson, they are both POSSESSION receivers. A position we currently havew in spades. We need a guy who can REALLY stretch the field. I would prefer Desean Jackson for this, but, in light of my popularity here, I will take Stevie Johnson, if he can become a more consistant pass catcher. Right now he reminds me of a stone handed track star. Ginn Jr…..not sure if we bring him back. yes, he’s good returner, and his skill as a receiver has improved, but, to pay that kinda scratch for just a return guy who is constantly injured just doesn’t make fiscal sense to me when there are guys on the team who can be either taught that position, or who have had the responsibility in college. With just as much speed. For everything else, we are in agreement.

4 drops out of 130 plus targets, can’t be stone handed. By statistics, Johnson has the best hands in the NFL.

Stevie and Kyle Williams have the dubious distinction....

Of having fairly decent numbers statistically. YET….they both suffered from having really BAD breaks in judgement at the most inopportune times. I agree Johnson had a bunch of great catches, yet, he consistantly DROPS those same passes on 3rd downs and in the endzone when they are needed the most. Thus my apprehension. Although, I am in complete agreement that he might be a logical down field threat for the Niners that might not cost us and arm and a leg to retain.

relax guy...

It is sooooo obviouse are FO knows how to put a team togehter. Last year we were all freaking out and talking about how Baalke doesnt know what he is doing. So I say this relax First off it obviouse baalke And company know what to do. Second guys we have 30 mil under cap I just read how Panthers cowboys steelers ect. Are in cap hell right now so look I do belive we dont let players like Roger, Goldson, brooks, go those are game changers and Are Special teams like Ginn,Costanzo frankly are ST players and they know that so wont cost much. So I will say this if we lose 1 or 2 of those guys after last year I will give FO office respect cause they have earned it but if it back fires than there in trouble but I do belive we get all the mentioned guys above back I feel Fo knows how close we were so why change it. Unless they really do ask for outrages money and wont budge plus I feel Fo will get those guys under contract. Also do it were we will have a some money to see if we cant make a play for bowe or vincent Jackson even colston. Either way if not we will make it so we can if not sign a big name maybe we get a few nice wr and i know you guys are worried about guard but snyder I think did a pretty good job so if we keep continuity on the offenesive line but again I trust the FO If they look and think they can find a filler who is better thats great.

Not really panicing...but...

It’s only one season. I’m not sure I’m willing to call Trent Baalke and co. the next coming of the Steelers FO. Granted, they did SEEm to make some good decisions personnel wise. But, having a glass half full mentallity, it’s consistancy that counts in this league. IMO the FO got very lucky taking a flyer on a few guys that reall panned out. They could have easily continued playing sub-par football which got them jettisoned from their last team.

When it comes to both Ginn and Costanzo, I am in complete agreeement that they provide a decent amount of play when they are on the field. HOWEVEr, to say that they automatically deserve to return is ludicrous in that they are both SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYERS primarily. Which means that the possibility that we can get other players who provide us with not only SP play but, consistant, INCREASED DEPTH on O & D would be better uses of those roster spots.

Finally, when it comes to Snyder, the O-line played decent. But, as great as they were playing the run, they also were HIGHLY ineffective playing the pass. Causing Alex to eat it a ton. Not a good idea for a plyer who already has 2 major injuries in his career thus far.Count the fact we are no doubt going to make him the QB of the now for the team. Just saying. An upgrade to the O-line that helps him stay upright is definaely a necessity.
