February 13th 7-Round 49ers Mock

This will all change after free agency, the combine, and the college pro days. Remember this is for entertainment only.

This mock uses www.nfldraftscout.com for the estimated round a player is taken. I generally took players 1 round earlier than their target round since the 9ers are picking at the end of the round.

Returning free agents: Alex Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Carlos Rogers, Dashon Goldson, Adam Snyder, Josh Morgan, Larry Grant, Blake Costanzo, Madieu Williams, CJ Spillman

Gone: Chilo Rachal, Moran Norris, Reggie Smith, Tavares Gooden, Ted Ginn Jr, Brett Swain, Justin Peele

The niners won't miss Chilo. Moran may not get signed anywhere else, so they can keep him on speed dial. Same goes for Justin Peele. Ted Ginn Jr is the only one on this list that hurts because of his KR/PR abilities, but he'll get an offer for more than the 9ers want to pay him.

Of the returning free agents, only Alex Smith (yes I said it), Rogers, Goldson, and Brooks are critical. The rest will only be back at the right price. As for new free agents, the 9ers will spend their money on their own guys before another teams stars. So, don't expect Carl Nicks, Bowe, V Jackson, etc. They might get someone like Meachem or Eddie Royal though.

The mock is after the jump...

Star-divide

1.30 WR Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina, 6-4 229 4.56

Wow, in December Alshon was being mocked as a top 10 pick. Now he's getting mocked into the 2nd round and the press are continuing to try to drive down his stock. They say there is a bust potential with him, but with his size he's worth the risk with the 49ers 30th pick. If he goes before the 30th, then Georgia Tech's Stephen Hill is the pick or a big athletic WR who can win in the red zone. (Sorry to all the Mo Sanu fans)

2.62 OG Kevin Zeitler, Wisconsin, 6-4 315 5.28

Ok, I'm not wild about this pick as I'm not sure he'd be a significant upgrade to the right side of the 9ers O-line but he fills a big need. Don't be surprised if the 49ers trade up to get the massive Iowa State Kelechi Osemele or stay in this spot and take the only slightly less massive, small school prospect, Amini Silatolu from MIdwestern State. In any event, the 49ers will address the right side of the line early to replace Chilo Rachal and ultimately move Snyder into backup/utility role.

3.94 WR Joe Adams, Arkansas, 5-11 174 4.38

Double dipping on a WR already? With first pick they got a massive redzone target. With this 3rd pick they get a poor man's DeSean Jackson without quite the same "can't cover me" skills, but also without the same baggage. This pick also let's the 9ers feel comfortable with the loss of the Ted Ginn. The 2012 WRs would become Crabtree, Kyle Williams, Alshon Jeffery, Joe Adams, Josh Morgan and a moderately priced free agent like Robert Meachem or Eddie Royal. An alternative to Adams in this spot is his equally speedy teammate Jarius Wright..

4.126 CB Coryell Judie, Texas A&M, 5-11 190 4.48

Unlike a lot of the media and maybe some fans, I don't see CB as a burning need unless Carlos Rogers gets away. Please no more mocks with Janoris Jenkins or Chase Minnefield to the 49ers with the first round pick. On the other hand, every team can use another quality CB in the pass happy NFL. Similar to Culliver last year, the 49ers will stick with the mantra that you can't coach speed when it comes to corners. If Judie is gone then look for alternative playmaking CB Omar Bolden from Arizona State in this spot.

5.157 OLB/DE Donte Paige-Moss, North Carolina, 6-4 260 4.67

The 9ers only had 3 OLBs on the 53-man roster last year, and 5 ILBs. Ideally they'd have 4 and 4. They'll want to resign Ahmad Brooks, but also expect them to draft some depth to back up their three starters. Donte Paige-Moss has the most upside of anyone that might be on the board at the end of the fifth round. Kind of has a Jason Pierre-Paul ring to it. If not Donte, then look for Notre Dame's Darius Flemming, Aldon Smith's old teammate Jacques Smith, or former HS phenom Adrian Robinson from Temple.

6.189 FS Christian Thompson, South Carolina St, 6-0 213 4.45

What is it about South Carolina and big and fast prospects? Christian Thompson might be a little stiff in the hips and might not be the most football savvy prospect but he has the measurables. He's worth a gamble to provide some depth behind Dashon Goldson. Look for South Florida's Jerrell Young in this spot if not Thompson.

7.221 RB Darell Scott, South Florida 6-1 240 4.48

If Darell Scott still runs in the 4.4s at the combine then expect him to shoot up the board. The 9ers will look for someone to give Anthony Dixon a push for the 3rd RB and possibly find a gem in a power runner. Think Brandon Jacobs without the foot in his mouth with this pick. If Scott is gone then look for Michigan State's Edwin Baker, small school Louisiana Tech's Lennon Creer, or Robert Turbin's backup Michael Smith from Utah State.

If we're drafting a guard at the end of the second let it be Zeitler

Konz might have made him look a little better than he really is but he’s damn solid and I just feel huge bust potential from Kelechi.

Here’s him getting his butt whipped by Oklahoma in 2010 http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=5O2UR_FWqas#!

And he's not a guy you ever want pulling either.

I like Zeitler, I’m just afraid he’s too good to last till #62. I think he’ll be an attractive option for some of the zone blocking teams in the middle of the second.

If he shows up at the combine in good shape

and runs a good 40 and proves the naysayers wrong (in regards to his weight and speed), would you still think he would be a bad pick?

wait until the combine. The media loves to make guys rise and fall. They sense someone falling and they pile on. I personally like Stephen Hill better, but if the front office selects AJ then I’ll trust their professional judgment.

I heard he was walking. I think he has a great career ahead of him as a speed walker.

by reedkrase on Feb 14, 2012 4:10 PM PST up reply actions

Indeed. If he's this fat and slow, at the combine, that'll say a lot about his work ethic.

His play diminished in ’11 from his 2010 campaign. Part of it was because of him, part of it was because of his QBs.

I don’t want another WR with bad work ethic. Can’t play with ‘em. Can’t win with ‘em. Can’t coach ‘em. Can’t do it.

Just curious

Who do you think, in this particular mock draft, are the WR’s that go before Alshon? Secondly, this is more a statement than a question, but we have a few other needs to address before we start taking liberties by drafting a WR in the 1st AND 3rd.

by ratumike on Feb 14, 2012 2:43 AM PST reply actions

Have to agree....

Not big on Jeffery because of the concerns with his speed, would rather wait til later and get a player less touted with better or similar measurables. Also, if you’re going WR in the first, should be looking at secondary depth around the third; like Iloka for better safety depth.

by 9thevolution on Feb 14, 2012 6:19 AM PST up reply actions

Who I had going before AJ?

I was going off of www.nfldraftscout.com rankings.

You can see their WR rankings here http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/probe.php?genpos=WR&draftyear=2012&sortorder=tsxpos&order=ASC

They have
Justin Blackmon rnd 1
Kendal Wright rnd 1
Michael Floyd rnd 1-2
Mo Sanu rnd 1-2
Alshon Jeffery rnd 2
Reuben Randle rnd 2
Stephen Hill rnd 2
Nick Toon rnd 2-3
Juron Criner rnd 2-3

Possible #1 Wide Receivers

I’m not specifying which round these guys would be taken in. They’re just some potential #1 WR’s that I wouldn’t mind seeing drafted by the Niners at some point.

Yes:
Stephen Hill
Juron Criner
Brian Quick
Marvin McNutt

Maybe:
Nick Toon
Rueben Randle
Marvin Jones
Gerell Robinson

Feel free to share your opinions good or bad regarding these guys.

Toon I don't think has the physical ability to be an elite #1...

but he is a great WR right now coming out of college. He would likely be #1 on this team from Day 1. If not for his injury history, I’d say to take a shot at him, but we can probably get the same thing out of Morgan.

by 9thevolution on Feb 14, 2012 8:00 AM PST up reply actions

Speed?

That’s why I put Toon as a maybe. I like his size, hands and route running. I question his speed and durability. I don’t think he’d be the explosive big-play guy we’re looking for at WR. He may not be a true #1 WR, but I think he might make a good possesion receiver and a viable red-zone target, but not much more than that.

"SHUT UP MEG!"

by kailuakid9er on Feb 14, 2012 8:31 AM PST up reply actions

Yep, you're right....

And we already have exactly that in Morgan. If Toon was feasible in the 4th or 5th round, I’d be on board in a second, but not in the 2nd round. Would rather grab Criner, McNutt, or even Streeter.

by 9thevolution on Feb 14, 2012 8:52 AM PST up reply actions

Wary of Streeter

I wanted to put Streeter in the “Maybe” category because of his size/speed, but I would’ve liked to have seen more consistent production or progression in production like the others WR’s I listed. That was my criteria when I picked guys to put on this list. He had almost no production until this past year.

by kailuakid9er on Feb 14, 2012 10:41 AM PST up reply actions

He's a possession receiver, same as Toon, with less polish and no injury history...

They measure up almost identical. Toon will likely be injured for most of his rookie contract and only garner minimal interest after that. Toon is a 5th rounder at best based on that. I’d rather gamble on a guy who can at least stay healthy and have the coaches teach him how to play in the NFL. Toon has hit his ceiling already.

There are alot of people saying this is a deep WR draft.

If you are looking for a #1 it isn’t. There is Michael Floyd and Justin Blackmon and one random guy might surprise everyone by landing in a cherry situation but nobody will know who it is until the year after it happens if at all. And even with those two, you have to keep Floyd healthy and sober and Blackmon isn’t a guy anywhere in the realm of the Johnsons or Fitzy — he isn’t that special athletically and might end up being merely average at the next level.

This is a deep WR draft if you are looking for a developmental project or a possession receiver.

Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.

by Ougadas on Feb 14, 2012 9:52 AM PST up reply actions

There are some players that may force you to double team them.

There are actually a large amount of day 2 wrs that have size which could cause the double team. This is a talented WR class if you compare the last 5.

Gonna make the WR position relevant again? When?

by rlott#42 on Feb 14, 2012 10:30 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, the "size" group

Which one?

That’s the question. Because like you say there are several of these guys with size, although some of them like McNutt and Criner lost a couple inches when the tape came out. We know that the majority of them will bust out because it takes more than size to succeed at the next level.

Some will bust out no matter where they land.
Some will succeed or bust depending on where they land and the coaching they get.
And if we want a guy that will succeed no matter where he lands, we are looking at a high pick in a different year. This year I don’t see any receiver like that.

So that’s the real question. Can you avoid the guys in the first category and do you have the right staff, scheme, and situation to make a guy in the second category work and can you draft him before someone else does?

Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.

by Ougadas on Feb 14, 2012 11:57 AM PST up reply actions

McNutt falls into that bust category.

I’d take him with a 6th or 7th.

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Feb 14, 2012 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

You never know

Outside of the 49ers organization Jerry Rice and T.O. were guys that most people wouldn’t have expected to be #1 WR’s let alone a HOF WR and a possible HOF caliber candidate.

If you look at a guy who’s seen as or labeled a #1 WR in the draft by everyone he’s just as likely to turn into J.J. Stokes or Michael Crabtree as he is Megatron or Fitzy.

"SHUT UP MEG!"

by kailuakid9er on Feb 14, 2012 10:35 AM PST up reply actions

Rice was actually going to Dallas at #17

They thought they were the only ones that knew about him. They were wrong. We had I think the #28 pick and traded up to #16 to get Jerry. So people did expect Jerry to be pretty good.

But you are right, sometimes a guy like Owens does come out of the 3rd round.

But there are 160-190 players (comp picks incl) picked in the 3-7th round every year. How many come out and succeed like T.O.? A handful in a decade compared to the volume of players that end up selling used cars.

Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.

I was aware of Dallas' interest in RIce

I did say “most people”, not like the Niners were the only ones who knew. It’s pretty sweet them sticking it to Dallas though. Ha!

My point is that we don’t know for sure who’s going to be the bust and who’s going to be da Bomb. Whether they’re labeled by most people as a #1 WR or not.

I’m expecting a 4.35-4.37. If he runs a 4.32 I think he’s a top 10 pick. I might take him in front of Blackmon

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Feb 14, 2012 5:12 PM PST up reply actions

Seems like a deep WR pool

Lots of guys with 1 or 2 of Size, Speed, or Playmaking ability but very few with all three like last years’ top WRs.

Blackmon – Not tall enough or fast enough. Crabtree II
Wright – Not big enough
Floyd – Might be the best one to come out of this class!
A Jeffery – Not fast enough
Stephen Hill – Also might be the best of class

Lot of guys that I like in this class though. Good year for the 9ers to be looking for 2 WRs. I’d add the following to kailuakid9er’s list of Yes/Maybe

Tommy Streeter
Joe Adams
Ryan Broyles
Jeff Fuller
Jordan White
Devon Wylie (Wylie, Broyles, Adams are a different kind of WR than the others big guys on this list)
Greg Childs?

Additions to Yes/Maybe

My criteria for the list was size, speed and production, which is why I excluded the guys under 6 feet.

I wanted to put Streeter in the "Maybe" category because of his size/speed, but I would’ve liked to have seen more consistent production or progression in production like the others WR’s I listed. He had all of 6 catches up until this past year.

I probably could’ve included Fuller and Childs.

I should’ve included Jordan White, though I’d like it if he was taller.

Dropped easy passes, poor separation against corners at the Big 12 level (not particularly great corners right now)

not crisp routes, poor acceleration leading him to be functionally slow (mid 4.5s), tends to get jammed against physical corners and lastly heavily inflated size numbers

Gimme 1 round!

3 of those 6 were Crabtree's negatives that we ignored (me amongst other fans charmed by his ridiculous catch numbers)

Except Crabs didn’t have the tendency to drop easy passes in college. When he got to the NFL and didn’t have softballs floated to him by Graham Harrell they started bouncing of his hands left and right.

Like what you did here

But some few own points of view:

1.30 I like the pick. I like a lot stephen hill, he can block (first run georgia system), he is a deep threat (+29YPC), he is tall (almost 6-5) and I think is quite fast. I’ve read his problem is route running because the georgia’s system. What I like even more is that I think we can trade down and still have him. One more 4th or fifth round pick!

2.62 nice pick

3.94 Josh Normal

4.126 FS Janzel Jackson

5.127 Adrian Hamilton would be nice to look at him too. Donta got benched in NCS I think… But good to have OLB depth.

6.189 Greg Childs.

7 I like start looking for RB improvement. Check out also Bryce Brown. I think he was a better prospect than trent richardson going out from high school. I’ve read soemthing about family he quite a year from football program… don’t really know but worth a look in the final round!

by Aleman12 on Feb 14, 2012 10:23 AM PST reply actions

Janzen Jackson

JJ seems like and outstanding athlete from what I’ve read and will be available late due to character concerns. I don’t think the 49ers will take guys like him or Janoris Jenkins for that matter. They’ll leave them to the likes of the Bengals. The 49ers made such a big deal of drafting guys with gold stars last years, ie they put gold stars on players on the board who were high character, team orientated, passionate about football guys. They said after the draft that they got more of those guys than any other team and with the exception of RoJo (who surely had a star) it was an outstanding draft.

I just tried to read up on Bryce Brown… think you meant Bryce Beal of Houston. 5.10 216 lbs. The scouting report said he had a solid but average skill set. http://www.fanaticalfootballfiend.com/3/category/beall%20bryce3e11ecd8d4/1.html

Ya, I guess I should've looked a little harder

But even if it is from a year ago he really looks out of shape for a WR

Malt liquor?

Do you care when you make overly-stereotypical comments?

my guess would be a plastic handle of winner’s cup (or the SC equivalent). What’s great about Winner’s cup is that if any is left after a party you can use it to clean the floors and bathroom.

I remember there were weight concerns regarding with Davis leading up to the draft

but I don’t remember hearing about any weight problems since he was drafted. Maybe I’ve missed something?

Each year before camp its been stated he's out of shape to the point where he can't finish the conditioning drills.

He was in better shape this year than last but he was still noted to be in the poorest condition of anybody on the team.

And for a guy with lateral agility issues to begin with

That’s not a sign that creates confidence in improvement.

I can dig up Barrows and Maioccos stuff from near on a year ago

and 2 years ago. But I’m not going to waste that amount of time. Believe me or not they talked about it in their camp descriptions.

It is known

Gimme 1 round!

Yeah I remember that too...

The entire OL dropped weight, including Davis, because they no longer needed to be 350 to impress Singletary.

It was all a trick

Singletary was very long on porkbelly futures.
