Feb 22 Pre Combine 7-round Mock
One more mock before the risers and fallers in the Combine change all prognostication.
Take a WR in the first round? Hold up there partner, this mock has the 49ers playing the possum and scooping up WRs in the late rounds.
Same as my Feb 13 mock, this mock uses www.nfldraftscout.com for the estimated round a player is taken. Unlike last time, this mock assumes Ahmad Brooks is not retained as was recently rumored by one of the Matts... either Matt B or Matt M.
Returning free agents: Alex Smith, Carlos Rogers, Dashon Goldson, Adam Snyder, Josh Morgan, Larry Grant, Blake Costanzo, Madieu Williams, CJ Spillman
Gone: Ahmad Brooks, Chilo Rachal, Moran Norris, Reggie Smith, Tavares Gooden, Ted Ginn Jr, Brett Swain, Justin Peele
The mock is after the jump...
1.30 OLB/DE Andre Branch, Clemson, 6-4 260 4.77
Most mocks have the 49ers taking a WR with this pick. If they let Ahmad Brooks go, then another rush OLB becomes the high priority and this draft is not deep enough to wait. Nick Perry would be the best case scenario at the 30 spot, but unlikely to fall so Branch is the best value that suits a need. Aldon Smith will move to the strong side replacing Brooks full time and Branch would platoon with Parys Haralson in 2012.
2.62 OG Kevin Zeitler, Wisconsin, 6-4 315 5.28
I was unsure about this pick in my last mock, but after reading the comments and rereading the scouting reports we should be happy to get Zeitler supporting the right side of the line.. Other choices are Iowa State Kelechi Osemele or highly regarded small school product, Amini Silatolu from MIdwestern State. Snyder moves into a backup/utility role.
3.94 CB Brandon Boykin 5-10 183 4.44
Boykin is a total beast and had a great Senior Bowl until he broke a bone. He'll recover quick enough to retain a high draft position. If we miss on Boykin, there are a ton of other CBs that should still be on the board; Josh Norman, Trumaine Johnson, Micah Pellerin, Coryell Judie. Certainly Omar Bolden should still be there. I really like Trumaine for his versatility to play CB or FS, and to cover the big WRs.
4.126 WR Jordan White, Western Michigan, 6-0 215 4.54
This is where it gets interesting... Jordan White was the most productive WR in D1 football last year. He's still undervalued at his current projected draft position. Not only that, but there still may be a number of decent WRs on the board like Ryan Broyles, Jeff Fuller, Marvin McNutt, Marvin Jones, Tommy Streeter, Dwight Jones, Gerrell Robinson, and possibly Joe Adams although he'll probably scorch his 40 at the Combine and shoot up the board. Any one of these guys could be a suitable addition to the 49ers along with a free agent like Meachem, Royal, Manningham, or some other reasonably priced pro. I'm not subscribing to the rumors of the 49ers landing Mike Wallace and therefore giving up a draft pick.
5.157 WR Jeff Fuller, A&M 6-3 220 4.52
The 49ers can double up on WRs and go right back to the same talent pool in the 5th by getting someone like Jeff Fuller who is dropping or possibly Gerrell Robinson for a big red zone target. Fuller is a bit of an enigma as he didn't seem to meet expectations of what he is capable of this past year. He sure has the "measurables" though.
6.189 RB Edwin Baker, Michigan St, 5-9 210 4.49
I think I had Baker in my last mock too. He'll come in to push Dixon and potentially be good enough to spell Gore in the power game between the tackles with Hunter still playing the change of pace role. If not Baker, then Terrance Ganaway, Lennon Creer, Darrel Scott, or Bryce Brown are all solid power running options in the late rounds.
7.221 CB/FS D'Anton Lynn, Penn State 6-0 205 4.5
I was gonna drop Damaris Johnson from Tulsa on y'all at this spot as a diminutive and speedy KR/PR to replace Ginn, but thought additional defensive backfield depth would be better. (Look Damaris up on www.fanaticalfootballfield.com). D'Anton provides versatility to backup either FS or CB spots. He's pretty smooth and fast from what I've read on him.

Those wrs will not be on the board in the 4th. There will not be a first rounder used on an olb, due to Aldon and Haralson starting. OLine, or Mike Wallace with the 1st. I love the Boykins pick but I doubt he falls this far.
Gonna make the WR position relevant again? When?
And you know this how ...

know which part? Using a 1st on an olb, when the offense needs more help makes no sense to me.
Anticipating Zeitler is there at 60 when we HAVE to upgrade the position is what I was thinking.

You might be right... but
In the most recent “Mocking the Draft” last weekend Jordan White went 129th, Gerrell Robinson when 143rd, and Jeff Fuller went 163rd. Granted that’s a bunch of hacks, but the point is the WR pool is deep enough that the 9ers could wait to later rounds before grabbing some guys along with some free agents.
And there are other late round prospects I didn't list
These WRs all went after the 126th pick; Jarius Wright, TY Hilton, DeVier Posey, Greg Childs, TJ Graham, AJ Jenkins, Marquis Maze, BJ Cunningham, Jermain Kearse, Danny Coale, Devon Wylie
I’m not high on all of them, but some have potential.
and if brooks does not sign?
haralson sucks at olb………..

No he doesn't.
He’s good in run support. Obviously he’s not a pass-rusher, but we can find someone to do that. My suggestion: Adrian Hamilton.
run support? lol

Definitely, didnt mean to aound condescending at all, I just yhink wrs want are pretty high. Quite a few teams need two and not to mention more teams are passing the rock more.

Terrance Tolliver went un-drafted last year.

So did Tori Gurley
I still don’t know why the 49ers didn’t snake him off the Packers practice squad. They’ve got enough of a logjam at WR already and should share the wealth!
OLB
While the 49ers might not draft an OLB, I don’t think your reasoning is enough for that. Haralson is looking more and more like a 2-down back, and would it surprise you if they tried to replicate what they did with Aldon this past year with another OLB? Not that they will, but it’s possible.

I just think the offensive line needs the attention first despite Haralson as a 2 down olb.
In that case you need a pure pass rushing DE? 3rd was majority nickel formations, so either J Smith and Aldon play end together or they draft one, which could be left to later rounds. Brooks will be replaced by Aldon.

defense got the niners to the playoffs

I love a good defense, keeps you in any game
I say we keep feeding Fangio talent and let Harbaugh work his magic on offense eventually.
Exactly my thought.

Hell no, nothing magical about yhe offensive offense.
Gonna make the WR position relevant again? When?
Right, so improve the offense, the defense will still be stout.
Gonna make the WR position relevant again? When?
defense needs to be kept at a high level

Brooks leaving would cause that to not happen?
Doubtful. Defense didn’t prevent the team from advancing to the Bowl, the offense didn’t put up the points.
Gonna make the WR position relevant again? When?
I fthe 49ers are lucky enough to get Branch at 30,
they would likely use him exactly like they used Smith in 2011.
I don;‘t think they;ll take a pass rusher at 30 and an offensive lineman in round 2 unless thy lose both Brooks AND Snyder, but it’s certainly possible.
Jordan White is projected to go in the fifth or sixth round.
Unless he runs a 4.3 at the combine he should be there at the end of the 4th, and the 49ers should be thrilled to get him there, too. He’s a force of nature.
I like all the picks except Zeitler and Baker, and would not complain at all if these were the players we got.
Good mock.
Nice draft, but I would have gone with a DB or OL in the 1st and 2nd and let DE/OLB wait till 3rd
I just don’t think it’s necessary or financially wise to have 2 1st round rush OLB on the roster. The question then becomes which of them do you keep when contracts expire? At that point you would invest the big LB money into the outside and we would have to get rid of Willis and Bowman; or hack money from another position group. If we were a true 3-4 defense, then yes, it would be best to pay the money to OLB and not ILB, but we are doing the exact opposite at this point. Our LB talent is on the inside and we don’t even know if Smith is going to play LB well; he’s a hell of a pass rusher from DE though.
Best to spread your elite talent out to multiple position groups and fill the left over spots with the best talent you can get for less money.
