Super Bowl XLVI Open Thread: It's Almost Over

The New England Patriots and New York Giants square off today in the finale to a wild 2011 NFL season. Super Bowl XLVI kicks off at approximately 3:29pm PT with the Patriots sitting as modest 2 1/2 point favorites over the Giants. The line opened at 3 1/2 but a lot of money has been coming in on the Giants since the line was set.

I actually think this is a game built for the Giants to win. Although the field turf in Indianapolis benefits the Patriots prolific offense, I think the Giants have the combined offense and pass rush to win this game. The Giants secondary won't wow many people against an elite quarterback like Tom Brady, but their pass rush could slow him down just enough to keep this game manageable.

As for the Giants offense, I think they have a much better chance of shredding the Patriots swiss cheese secondary than Joe Flacco and the Ravens did. On that turf against that secondary, I think Eli Manning and his band of receivers do some big things tonight. When asked for a prediction, I've gone with the Giants winning 41-37. That would be the highest combined point total in Super Bowl history, so it is possible I'm over-looking something. And yet, when looking at this matchup in this context, I see a fairly wild shootout unfolding. I'm sure that guarantees a 17-14 game, but I'll stick with my shootout pick.

If you are not in front of a television for the game, but still want to watch, NBC Sports is offering a free live online stream of the game for the first time ever. Head over to NBCSports.com to watch the stream.

The good news is that in a few hours, the 2011 NFL season will be over and we can fully look ahead to the excitement of 2012. 2011 was a huge year for the 49ers and hopefully 2012 will only be bigger!

Better to be

Lucky (Eli) or Good (Brady)?

by benna11 on Feb 5, 2012 3:21 PM PST reply actions

Brady was lucky too

they didn’t beat a single team with a winning record during the regular season, got the horrible Broncos in the 1st playoff game, and beat the Ravens because Lee Evans decided to be lazy with his would be, go ahead TD catch

i didn't say Eli wasn't lucky either lol

Well all Brady does is throw 5 yards passes to a 6’6" TE that bowls people over for 60 yard TD’s

he won early on with a coach getting away with cheating

and special rules that let his defense sexually assault WR’s on the field

one way of looking at it

other way is that they changed the proper rules to create the current pass happy basketball scoring game we see today, and stop a decent defensive team winning a championship

question

do ‘proper’ NFL fans in the US get hugely excited by the Superbowl? seems to me like Championship games are the pinnacle of the season – and all the non-fans jump on board for this one and the whole ‘show’ detracts from the game?

1/13 on third downs…………………………………blame kyle williams
giants had 58% possession of the ball…..blame kyle williams
Greg Roman stops running the ball………..blame kyle williams
offense not capable of scoring on TWO opportunities in the last three minutes……blame kyle williams
Offense fails to get in FG position in overtime to win the game…..blame kyle williams

Aside from not getting in FG position in overtime all this stuff happened BEFORE the fumble on the punt return, yet the whole loss is put on Kyle. Look, I’m not saying he wasn’t a reason for the loss, but to put all the blame on him when there were somany other factors in losing the game is dumb

Two muffed punts

that led to 10 points. Already said that one muffed point and we wouldn’t be having this discussion. It’s the combo of the two, one during overtime after he’d already muffed one.

That first one I don’t even really blame him for—it was a fluke play.

Yeah it's a team game

but when you make two crucial mistakes that lead directly to 10 points for the other team and the game was a 3 point game.

You can quite safely say that it’s his fault.

There’s not many times you’ll ever catch me saying that the fault for a loss (or credit for a win), goes to one player, but this is definitely one of those times.

by Moflush on Feb 5, 2012 4:52 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Brady is the only thing keeping me from turning this game off and going to bed.

I hate hoodie and I hate the entitled Boston sports fan mentality (and my parents are from Boston and I’m a Red Sox fan). Hoodie is just such a sour, miserable prick that it kills the Pats for me, a team I quite liked in the early part of this decade.

And God I hate the Giants. It would be a joke if Eli won more SBs than his brother. I watched the SB42 drive and it was laughable compared to some of Montana’s drives, or Brady’s drive in 2001. He nearly threw two picks, missed on multiple receivers and only got bailed out by the play of a lifetime from Tyree. Coughlin’s a jerk and the media overrating a 9-7 team that got outscored during the season is nauseating.

But I still like Brady, so go Pats, even if it means he ties St. Joe for most SB wins.

They’ll never get a #1, they aren’t really that bad of a team, just tremendously unlucky.

What I hope for more than anything is Gauthier gets fired and they get a new GM with fresh ideas and a new coach who is NOT Saint Patrick. That would be a disaster.

by Bitter Fan on Feb 5, 2012 5:51 PM PST up reply actions

they do have a shot at the number one because of the lottery but columbus will have a 50% shot at it since it’s pretty much guaranteed they finish last

I’d love to get one of Yakupov or Grigorenko but I’m not sure it will happen.

Really the biggest thing is a new GM who has the freedom to release Gomez, find a way to get out of the Kaberle deal and put together a team that can play something beyond system hockey which the team has played since Jacques freaking Lemaire was coach 30 years ago.

Though ironically, I would hire Lemaire in a second to be coach. He’s a fantastic coach even if I hate his style of play.

by Bitter Fan on Feb 5, 2012 5:55 PM PST up reply actions

definately want one of those two

Hopefully Gauthier can somehow unload some of the veteran players like gill, moen, etc for some picks. Teams are actually quite interested in them because of their leadership and experience in the playoffs

by mtl9ers14 on Feb 5, 2012 5:58 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, stockpiling picks is priority #1. We’ve traded so many over the years.

The thing is this team has some nice pieces. Price is excellent, Subban is struggling but still has great potential, Emelin looks like a stud, Pacioretty could be an elite winger, Petit Gar is a nice 2/3 centre, etc. They’re probably 4 good players from a 100 point team. Easier said than done, but one of those players if his knee ever improves is Markov, so they really only need to find the other 3.

Diehl and er…what’s his name…err..the black guy, are turnstiles. It’s great that Diehl has that silly Croatian tattoo, it makes it easy to spot the defensive end running around him.

Besides, if Eli holds the ball long enough one of his awesome WRs is going to get open, so it’s in his best interest to do so.

oh wait its the golden boy, who has his own set of rules

by danknerd49 on Feb 5, 2012 6:11 PM PST up reply actions

No

if the sideline doctors clear him he’s fine. Two problems with that.

1.) The only way they can clear him is by asking him questions which he can lie about

2.) There’s a definite conflict of interest.

If he comes out for a concussion during a game then he has to be cleared by independent doctors but not until then.

It’s why I think that the team doctors should be hired by the NFL, not the individual teams.

by smileyman on Feb 5, 2012 6:14 PM PST up reply actions

yes the conflict of interest is pretty wrong

Next week that doctor will be getting a notice saying that his services are no longer needed by the team.

by smileyman on Feb 5, 2012 7:23 PM PST up reply actions

Isn't it crazy

How the Giants WRs were seen as a liability before last year and now they are fairly stacked. We need to get some WR help like that.

by 49er Cappy on Feb 5, 2012 7:25 PM PST up reply actions

Eli is elite?

Funny that the only person saying that in the middle of the season was Eli himself. I don’t think Eli is elite. He’s good. Sometimes really good. And he didn’t make mistakes this game. And made a few nice throws. But he’s no Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers. Or Tom Brady even.

IMO, that doesn’t matter. He won the **** Super Bowl. That’s what matters. Dan Marino was elite on a level no one thought existed. Look what good that did him.

So, not only do we have to acknowledge that, yes, the Giants were the better team and, against some pretty stacked odds, got their 4th Lombardi trophy. But now we have to say Eli is elite?

We’ll talk in a couple of years.

Eli’s good. Likely a HOFer after this win. But elite? Not buying it. But I don’t think ELITE status in one’s position means a whole lot. I just bristle at the notion of calling someone “elite” just because he won a Super Bowl.

I mean, I don’t care how many Super Bowls Tim Tebow wins. The guy just isn’t “elite”, ya know?

by smathis on Feb 5, 2012 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

but to call him a game manager or lucky or “in a good position” is stupid

"Game Manager" is stupid

Montana was a fucking game manager. He’s also the greatest QB ever.

by Virginia9er on Feb 5, 2012 7:53 PM PST up reply actions

Double sheesh...

How does calling me stupid rank on the “rationality” scale?

So here goes…

Eli was LUCKY… Because of Romo and the Cowboys not even bothering to show up in their own stadium. Because Green Bay thoroughly underestimated them and also didn’t show up to play. Because Kyle Williams. Because a really iffy forward progress rule that doesn’t fall that way half the time. Because Wes Welker dropped a pass he catches 99.9% of the time. Because Deion Branch and Aaron Hernandez dropped passes they catch at least 80% of the time. And because Mario Manningham made an incredible catch that doesn’t get made even 10% of the time. That wasn’t a great throw. It was a great catch.

Eli played like a GAME MANAGER. He played smart. He made the plays he needed to. He didn’t make mistakes with the ball. He played like Alex Smith. He made some good throws. But, as Fear the Tree points out, Joe Montana was a Game Manager. Joe Montana was also not considered “elite” until the late ‘80s. He wasn’t even in the conversation of being an elite QB in the NFL. Not even in his second Super Bowl. Not being “elite” doesn’t mean squat.

Eli is in a GOOD POSITION. Without Justin Tuck and that defense, do the Giants win? Do the Giants even make it to the playoffs if they had Green Bay’s defense or Jacksonville’s? The Giants have stumbled into a fantastic trio of playmakers in Manningham, Nicks and Cruz. And their running game has stepped up as well. Eli has a good thing going. If he were to go out for a season like his brother Peyton, there’s no way that Giants team goes 1-15 like the Colts did. Good coach. Good defense. Playmakers. Good position. Like Montana in ‘84, ’88 and ’89. Or Young in ’94. Doesn’t make him less good. Just gives him that little bit that Brady didn’t have.

So how is that “stupid”? And how does the guy who resorts to name-calling “rational”?

I’m really drawing a blank here.

I read it the first time you posted it.

by Virginia9er on Feb 5, 2012 8:01 PM PST up reply actions

Still not seeing...

how I’m be-littling Eli.

Just wanted to backup my stupidity. You didn’t call me stupid. smileyman did. In a classic troll move nonetheless.

Please read that long post before drawing conclusions. I fail to see anything irrational in there.

QBs can be lucky (Terry Bradshaw), game managers (Bob Griese) and in good situations (pretty much every QB that’s won a Super Bowl with the exception of Joe Namath and Peyton Manning) and still be HOFers and good/great QBs.

And QBs can be elite (Fouts, Marino, Kelly, Rivers, Vick) and not get anywhere with it.

Eli won. That’s great for him. And great for Giants fans.

But it doesn’t change my impression of his talent as a QB no more or less than I believe Tony Romo is the clutch and elite talent I was told he was after the overtime win against the Niners in Week 2.

by smathis on Feb 5, 2012 8:08 PM PST up reply actions

Not seeing what?

I’m not trying to make you see anything other than calling him a troll is pretty stupid when he was fairly moderate in his arguments and you keep going off about Eli. His body of work speaks for itself, you are entitled to any opinion you want.

I’ve read it all, but keep on pontificating if it makes you feel better, I have better things to do…

He can’t call Alex a “game manager” and then come out and play the same sort of game in the Super Bowl and somehow be “elite”.

Both QBs had middling games. Neither played their best. Eli played good enough to win. Good for him.

Depends how one feels about the 49ers offense, they aren’t very good. However neither is the Giants. Terrible running team, Bear Pascoe is possibly their best TE, not a good offensive line. Its not like Manning and his WR can light most teams up, they manage to get 20-23 points.
