Super Bowl XLVI Open Thread: It's Almost Over
The New England Patriots and New York Giants square off today in the finale to a wild 2011 NFL season. Super Bowl XLVI kicks off at approximately 3:29pm PT with the Patriots sitting as modest 2 1/2 point favorites over the Giants. The line opened at 3 1/2 but a lot of money has been coming in on the Giants since the line was set.
I actually think this is a game built for the Giants to win. Although the field turf in Indianapolis benefits the Patriots prolific offense, I think the Giants have the combined offense and pass rush to win this game. The Giants secondary won't wow many people against an elite quarterback like Tom Brady, but their pass rush could slow him down just enough to keep this game manageable.
As for the Giants offense, I think they have a much better chance of shredding the Patriots swiss cheese secondary than Joe Flacco and the Ravens did. On that turf against that secondary, I think Eli Manning and his band of receivers do some big things tonight. When asked for a prediction, I've gone with the Giants winning 41-37. That would be the highest combined point total in Super Bowl history, so it is possible I'm over-looking something. And yet, when looking at this matchup in this context, I see a fairly wild shootout unfolding. I'm sure that guarantees a 17-14 game, but I'll stick with my shootout pick.
If you are not in front of a television for the game, but still want to watch, NBC Sports is offering a free live online stream of the game for the first time ever. Head over to NBCSports.com to watch the stream.
The good news is that in a few hours, the 2011 NFL season will be over and we can fully look ahead to the excitement of 2012. 2011 was a huge year for the 49ers and hopefully 2012 will only be bigger!

Brady was lucky too
they didn’t beat a single team with a winning record during the regular season, got the horrible Broncos in the 1st playoff game, and beat the Ravens because Lee Evans decided to be lazy with his would be, go ahead TD catch

Don't need another pass rusher
or another defensive lineman. Who’re they going to replace?
Good safeties are available in FA this year.
I’m ok with a CB in the first or 2nd, but not 4 picks
You don't necessarily draft to replace
Strengthening a strength can be as crucial.

Offense fails to get in FG position in overtime to win the game…..blame kyle williams
Aside from not getting in FG position in overtime all this stuff happened BEFORE the fumble on the punt return, yet the whole loss is put on Kyle. Look, I’m not saying he wasn’t a reason for the loss, but to put all the blame on him when there were somany other factors in losing the game is dumb

Two muffed punts
that led to 10 points. Already said that one muffed point and we wouldn’t be having this discussion. It’s the combo of the two, one during overtime after he’d already muffed one.
That first one I don’t even really blame him for—it was a fluke play.

Yeah it's a team game
but when you make two crucial mistakes that lead directly to 10 points for the other team and the game was a 3 point game.
You can quite safely say that it’s his fault.
There’s not many times you’ll ever catch me saying that the fault for a loss (or credit for a win), goes to one player, but this is definitely one of those times.

Why am I watching this game?
I’m only getting madder and madder. 49ers clearly would have won this game.
To see the Patriots go down in flames?
that’s always entertaining (despite the fact that I do like Tom Brady)
Sigh
I really dislike the Patriots, but I can’t stand New Yorkers either….
This is the 1st time in a really long time that I wasn’t excited about the SB.
that Drew Brees / Phillip Rivers worked out isn't the point
complaining about playing for the Chargers is.
But I guess he’s been good since then. Was a tough guy in the 49ers game.
BUT DAD, I DON'T WANNA PLAY IN SAN DIEGO,

the Pats are horseshit without Brady and his refs.
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"
I think Roman needs to get some play calling help
no sense of when to run plays or which plays to run
Did Harbaugh run a WCO this year?
I don’t think so. His press conference got us all excited, but most of the game was running with 7 linemen
Hope NN makes the offseason more bearable.
Can’t even get excited about the draft this year, being at the bottom…. not used to being so late.
Hope we move up to the teens at least
failing that move down and get extra picks in the 2nd and 3rd.
I really think there will be lots of action this year on draft trades because of the rookie cap.
True WCO is dead
Harbaugh runs a power running variation of the WCO
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"
Passing wise lots of short, intermediate stuff
3 and 5 step drops, aggressive running to set up 2nd and short. Limiting 7 step drops
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"

Brady is the only thing keeping me from turning this game off and going to bed.
I hate hoodie and I hate the entitled Boston sports fan mentality (and my parents are from Boston and I’m a Red Sox fan). Hoodie is just such a sour, miserable prick that it kills the Pats for me, a team I quite liked in the early part of this decade.
And God I hate the Giants. It would be a joke if Eli won more SBs than his brother. I watched the SB42 drive and it was laughable compared to some of Montana’s drives, or Brady’s drive in 2001. He nearly threw two picks, missed on multiple receivers and only got bailed out by the play of a lifetime from Tyree. Coughlin’s a jerk and the media overrating a 9-7 team that got outscored during the season is nauseating.
But I still like Brady, so go Pats, even if it means he ties St. Joe for most SB wins.

Nice win today over the Peg. terrible season but c’est la vie (that’s that is life, Monsieur Cunneyworth).
ya I probably would but I do love the city of Montreal
Too bad the habs didn’t play like that all season. Too little, too late. At this point winning is a bad thing since it keeps them farther away from that number 1 pick
Rule #1) If you hate Joe Buck, watch this www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkCSZKbyL94
Rule #2) Follow rule #1
They’ll never get a #1, they aren’t really that bad of a team, just tremendously unlucky.
What I hope for more than anything is Gauthier gets fired and they get a new GM with fresh ideas and a new coach who is NOT Saint Patrick. That would be a disaster.
agreed completely
they do have a shot at the number one because of the lottery but columbus will have a 50% shot at it since it’s pretty much guaranteed they finish last

Rule #2) Follow rule #1
I’d love to get one of Yakupov or Grigorenko but I’m not sure it will happen.
Really the biggest thing is a new GM who has the freedom to release Gomez, find a way to get out of the Kaberle deal and put together a team that can play something beyond system hockey which the team has played since Jacques freaking Lemaire was coach 30 years ago.
Though ironically, I would hire Lemaire in a second to be coach. He’s a fantastic coach even if I hate his style of play.
definately want one of those two
Hopefully Gauthier can somehow unload some of the veteran players like gill, moen, etc for some picks. Teams are actually quite interested in them because of their leadership and experience in the playoffs
Rule #1) If you hate Joe Buck, watch this www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkCSZKbyL94
Rule #2) Follow rule #1
Yeah, stockpiling picks is priority #1. We’ve traded so many over the years.
The thing is this team has some nice pieces. Price is excellent, Subban is struggling but still has great potential, Emelin looks like a stud, Pacioretty could be an elite winger, Petit Gar is a nice 2/3 centre, etc. They’re probably 4 good players from a 100 point team. Easier said than done, but one of those players if his knee ever improves is Markov, so they really only need to find the other 3.
yup
and they’ve got some nice prospects in gallagher, tinordi and beaulieu

As fat as Brandon Jacobs is
between him and Bradshaw I’d go with Jacobs every single time.
Also, the Giants o-line gets lots of credit for giving Eli time, but for such a good line he sure does get sacked and hit lots.
Overrated
Just like every other aspect of the Giants team. Since their playoff run people have been all over the team, when really they haven’t been that good.
Gimme Bradshaw
decisive runner with power. Jerry Rice’s “Tiptoe burglar” description of Jacobs is accurate.
The Dude: Oh boy. How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm once they've seen Karl Hungus.
Sorry, as I know this is turning into Bitter Fan takes issue with something smileyman says, but I don’t think their line is that good.
Diehl and er…what’s his name…err..the black guy, are turnstiles. It’s great that Diehl has that silly Croatian tattoo, it makes it easy to spot the defensive end running around him.
Besides, if Eli holds the ball long enough one of his awesome WRs is going to get open, so it’s in his best interest to do so.
Oh I agree about the line. I was just saying they were over rated
I think it’s not very good. Eli just stays in the pocket and gets pummeled

isnt that against the new rules?
oh wait its the golden boy, who has his own set of rules
No
if the sideline doctors clear him he’s fine. Two problems with that.
1.) The only way they can clear him is by asking him questions which he can lie about
2.) There’s a definite conflict of interest.
If he comes out for a concussion during a game then he has to be cleared by independent doctors but not until then.
It’s why I think that the team doctors should be hired by the NFL, not the individual teams.
By both players and the doctors
what’s the team doctor going to tell the star QB—sorry Tom, you can’t go back into the Super Bowl because we think you have a concussion?
Next week that doctor will be getting a notice saying that his services are no longer needed by the team.

I am no draft guru but I recall hearing this draft is deep in wide receivers and it is clearly the worst aspect of our team by a country mile. If you applied Walsh’s thinking to this year’s draft it would be the logical thing to do.

Changing of the guard; happier that the Pats lost
the Mannings have always had talent and been good but their time in the NFL may have peaked. Peyton is done and Eli won’t last forever
Brady and the Pats have probably peaked as well. Can’t replace the talent at all positions
I will definitely be surprised if I see either of these teams repeat next year. Age and injuries deplete even the best teams.
the time of the Harbaughs is almost here.
soon it will be non-stop John and Jim and the rest of the league will choke on it.
The Giants were...
a good team. The more balanced team and, no doubt, the better overall team going into this game.
But Eli is like the king of lucky breaks. Srsly.

by So. Cal. Niner. Fan. on Feb 5, 2012 7:22 PM PST up reply actions
I think he started that path the first SB
I’d agree that in that appearance he was in a good situation. This SB he led his team and played at an elite level
Isn't it crazy
How the Giants WRs were seen as a liability before last year and now they are fairly stacked. We need to get some WR help like that.
Eli is elite?
Funny that the only person saying that in the middle of the season was Eli himself. I don’t think Eli is elite. He’s good. Sometimes really good. And he didn’t make mistakes this game. And made a few nice throws. But he’s no Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers. Or Tom Brady even.
IMO, that doesn’t matter. He won the **** Super Bowl. That’s what matters. Dan Marino was elite on a level no one thought existed. Look what good that did him.
So, not only do we have to acknowledge that, yes, the Giants were the better team and, against some pretty stacked odds, got their 4th Lombardi trophy. But now we have to say Eli is elite?
We’ll talk in a couple of years.
Eli’s good. Likely a HOFer after this win. But elite? Not buying it. But I don’t think ELITE status in one’s position means a whole lot. I just bristle at the notion of calling someone “elite” just because he won a Super Bowl.
I mean, I don’t care how many Super Bowls Tim Tebow wins. The guy just isn’t “elite”, ya know?
You don't have to say that Eli is elite
but to call him a game manager or lucky or “in a good position” is stupid
"Game Manager" is stupid
Montana was a fucking game manager. He’s also the greatest QB ever.
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"
Please don't feed the troll.

Eli is elite.
See you next season.
Sheesh
smileyman is one of the only people around here with any sense of rationality right now and he’s being called the troll?
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh
Double sheesh...
How does calling me stupid rank on the “rationality” scale?
So here goes…
Eli was LUCKY… Because of Romo and the Cowboys not even bothering to show up in their own stadium. Because Green Bay thoroughly underestimated them and also didn’t show up to play. Because Kyle Williams. Because a really iffy forward progress rule that doesn’t fall that way half the time. Because Wes Welker dropped a pass he catches 99.9% of the time. Because Deion Branch and Aaron Hernandez dropped passes they catch at least 80% of the time. And because Mario Manningham made an incredible catch that doesn’t get made even 10% of the time. That wasn’t a great throw. It was a great catch.
Eli played like a GAME MANAGER. He played smart. He made the plays he needed to. He didn’t make mistakes with the ball. He played like Alex Smith. He made some good throws. But, as Fear the Tree points out, Joe Montana was a Game Manager. Joe Montana was also not considered “elite” until the late ‘80s. He wasn’t even in the conversation of being an elite QB in the NFL. Not even in his second Super Bowl. Not being “elite” doesn’t mean squat.
Eli is in a GOOD POSITION. Without Justin Tuck and that defense, do the Giants win? Do the Giants even make it to the playoffs if they had Green Bay’s defense or Jacksonville’s? The Giants have stumbled into a fantastic trio of playmakers in Manningham, Nicks and Cruz. And their running game has stepped up as well. Eli has a good thing going. If he were to go out for a season like his brother Peyton, there’s no way that Giants team goes 1-15 like the Colts did. Good coach. Good defense. Playmakers. Good position. Like Montana in ‘84, ’88 and ’89. Or Young in ’94. Doesn’t make him less good. Just gives him that little bit that Brady didn’t have.
So how is that “stupid”? And how does the guy who resorts to name-calling “rational”?
I’m really drawing a blank here.
Dude, calm down.
I read it the first time you posted it.
And I never called you stupid, I just don’t understand why you are calling him a troll while you continue to act like it is your mission to belittle Eli Manning for no reason whatsoever…
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh
Still not seeing...
how I’m be-littling Eli.
Just wanted to backup my stupidity. You didn’t call me stupid. smileyman did. In a classic troll move nonetheless.
Please read that long post before drawing conclusions. I fail to see anything irrational in there.
QBs can be lucky (Terry Bradshaw), game managers (Bob Griese) and in good situations (pretty much every QB that’s won a Super Bowl with the exception of Joe Namath and Peyton Manning) and still be HOFers and good/great QBs.
And QBs can be elite (Fouts, Marino, Kelly, Rivers, Vick) and not get anywhere with it.
Eli won. That’s great for him. And great for Giants fans.
But it doesn’t change my impression of his talent as a QB no more or less than I believe Tony Romo is the clutch and elite talent I was told he was after the overtime win against the Niners in Week 2.
Not seeing what?
I’m not trying to make you see anything other than calling him a troll is pretty stupid when he was fairly moderate in his arguments and you keep going off about Eli. His body of work speaks for itself, you are entitled to any opinion you want.
I’ve read it all, but keep on pontificating if it makes you feel better, I have better things to do…
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh

Hell, even the Niners vs. Giants game was better, even if we lost. This game sucked.

Yeah...
This wasn’t even a good game for Eli. A QB like Rodgers or Brees would’ve decimated the Patriots’ secondary. They were sloppy and weak and Eli played down to his opposition.
Guess a “game manager” can win a ring, eh?
Wasn't saying he's a "game manager"...
Just saying that, this game, he played like one.
Also taking a ding on him for calling Alex a game manager.
If Eli didn't play this game...
like a “game manager” QB, then his statements about Alex Smith being a game manager are unfounded as well. Just sayin’.
He can’t call Alex a “game manager” and then come out and play the same sort of game in the Super Bowl and somehow be “elite”.
Both QBs had middling games. Neither played their best. Eli played good enough to win. Good for him.
Should have been us;(
Great year, more than expected. Loved it! Soo fricking rad;)

So, at this point, perhaps it's safe to say the Brady/Montana comparisons are dead?
---
Revenge is ice cream.
For now at least
As much as we all love Montana, you know the next time Brady is deep in the playoffs the chatter will start up again (no I don’t agree with it).
I'd say so.
New England fans will say “5 superbowl appearances” blah blah blah et cetera, but everyone else realizes the truth.

You're probably right.
Still, there’s a reason no one compares Kelly to Montana.
No, but i know quite a few people that compare Elway to Montana.

They wouldn't...
if Elway hadn’t won two Super Bowls at the end of his career. Had Elway never gone to another Super Bowl after 1989, he’d be a footnote. Still a HOF great. But a footnote. Like Fran Tarkenton.
You are right, IMO
But Brady winning 3 early in his career is just as impressive as Elway winning 2 late in his career. These aren’t my views, but i do understand where other teams fans are coming from when they use these arguments.

I get it.
I don’t mind Brady/Montana comparisons. Brady is a great QB. Future HOFer and still has some years left on him. Maybe even a Super Bowl.
I was just pointing out that Kelly had an impressive number of SB appearances and no one ever seems to talk about him.
I like Brady better than Elway. I’m not a hater of either. Still like Montana best. But I’m a Niners fan, so I doubt that’s surprising.

Appearances don't mean squat.
You can appear at five super bowls and walk away with nothing.

That's not the point.
Using “he has X appearances in Y” to rationalize legacy is fairly silly because, appearing in the game means nothing, only winning does.

Revenge is ice cream.
I agree with you, that's why i said "New England fans will...". I'm not one of those :).
But, as somebody i can’t remember said “You can’t lose five Superbowls unless you play in 5 superbowls.”

pretty safe
Brady may never get that 4th…and unless that changes, he’ll just have to settle for being a pretty good QB, instead of a great Legend

No
Tom Brady has another 5 years at least left in him. With Belichick and a revamped defense they’ll be right back in the playoff hunt next year.
So, you're positing that he'll be an elite QB all the way till he's 39 years old?
---
Revenge is ice cream.
Only if he can have elite O-line play.
He’ll have the arm ‘til he’s 50.

You know the conference is bad is when this Pats team keeps finishing the regular season with the best AFC record.
Not sure how that is a good rationalization...

this whole game was bullshit.
It was boring and lame.
The Giants got lucky, we would have creamed the shit out if tom and it just makes my hate for the mannings grow even more.
eff the Giants and Eli and Cruz and that forward progress call in our nfc chapionship game.
by C.A._Rep_Los_ANGELS on Feb 5, 2012 7:14 PM PST via mobile reply actions
Because it's unfounded
Eli’s a game manager. The Giants are the luckiest team in football. Tom Brady sucks.
It’s just funny
I guess I would call it fairly normal rather than “funny.” This is a Niners blog, and I would say many fans are a little upset how things turned out. Many of us here love our team!

I’m not sure if I said that, especially since you’re clearly a huge fan! I was just responding to your dismissal of what I believe to be some fairly natural reactions to the way things have played out.

I think it's fine to say
Yeah the 49ers so would’ve smacked the Patriots around.
I don’t think it’s fine to say “Eli’s the luckiest QB in history and the Giants are the luckiiest team around and they have horshoes shoved up their asses, blah, blah, blah.”
That’s what 49er fans have been saying. Not “We should’ve been there and we would’ve won.”
I get what you’re saying! And I think I’d rather be able to say we gave a good team who won the super bowl everything we had…we took them the distance!
Let the countdown to next season begin!

It wouldn't have been so bad.
If the Patriots had shown up to play.
As it stands, it just looks like the Niners lost their 6th Super Bowl in the NFC Championship Game.
Them’s the breaks, I guess.
Neither team really showed up to play
The Pats defense has been awful all year and their offense tepid.
Patriots did show up, they have never been THAT good this year. Getting to the SB was overachieving IMO.

And some people didn't understand why other fans could be mad losing that NFCCG
The trophy was right there and they lost it.
I think any fan is mad
just that also fans of the game know the better team won that day, if the Niners had been better they would have won, they weren’t and didn’t. However, the season was a tremendous success given the circumstances and predictions.
I don't think the Giants are better.
They are better at QB and WR. The edge in every other area goes to the 49ers

We just didn’t get the breaks that day. Just as the Pats didn’t tonight.
I honestly think the Giants are a better, more well-rounded team than us
But we would have likely beat the patriots by more

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"
explain how they aren’t more well rounded than us
we have a better defense by a bit but their offense is miles ahead of us

by MichaelClutchtree on Feb 5, 2012 7:42 PM PST up reply actions
They scored 14 more points than the Niners during the regular season
And weren’t exactly high powered throughout the postseason either.
That’s my point though
their offense is MUCH better, and their defense is a few steps worse, but not by much like the patriots are. they are IMO the most well-rounded team, but if we just got a good QB and a good WR we would for sure be.
49ers:
Offense: 4/10
Defense: 10/10
Giants:
Offense: 8/10
Defense: 8/10

by MichaelClutchtree on Feb 5, 2012 7:48 PM PST up reply actions
Much better?
Depends how one feels about the 49ers offense, they aren’t very good. However neither is the Giants. Terrible running team, Bear Pascoe is possibly their best TE, not a good offensive line. Its not like Manning and his WR can light most teams up, they manage to get 20-23 points.
I disagree there
Its not cause I think Pascoe is a good TE. Ballard IMO is one of the worst starting TE in the league.
it don't matter though
the Giants might not be the best at any one thing, or even just better at QB/WR… they were the best in bringing it all together as the best. I am a HOMER Niner fan, and I do believe were are a better team, but not better this year that is just how it goes.
