2012 NFL Combine Players List: Anybody Jumping Out At You?

The NFL kicks off two weeks from tomorrow and lasts through February 28. After a month of bowl games followed by several "All Star Games", we take our next significant step forward in the NFL Draft process. The Combine will hurt some draft prospects, while we are guaranteed at least one workout warrior emerges to get over-drafted thanks to a strong performance in a drill that will have little to do with their football-playing ability.

SB Nation put together a rundown of the complete Combine invite list, and I've posted the full list after the jump as well. Mocking the Draft looks at some players that were snubbed this year and Rob Rang of CBS Sports pointed out the ten underclassmen who did not get invites (out of 65 declared underclassmen). Declaring for the draft might have been a poor career choice by guys like Wyoming RB Alvester Alexander, Texas RB Jamison Berryhill, Kansas State RB Bryce Brown, Minnesota TE Tiree Eure, Syracuse WR Dorian Graham, Boston College DE/OLB Max Holloway, Miami WR Aldarius Johnson, Tulsa WR Damaris Johnson, Purdue guard Ken Plue, and Auburn QB Barrett Trotter.

For some "tweener" players, the Draft will require a change of position for with some of the most prominent being defensive ends moving to outside linebacker. The Combine provides them an opportunity to work in drills that test their ability to drop into coverage and display a little more athleticism.

Players arrive in position groups over the course of four days and go through the same poking, prodding, drills and interview opportunities. Day one features x-rays, orientation and some interviews. Day two includes the official measurements, medical examinations, psychological testing (Wonderlic) and more interviews. Day three includes a meeting with the NFLPA and more psychological testing and interviews. Day four wraps it up with all the usual workout drills we have come to know and love on NFL Network.

Will you be watching NFL Network coverage of the event? It is strangely intoxicating to watch. You can see things happening, but in the moment it's just sort of random activities happening. We'll have some open threads for discussion, but in the meantime, how much weight do you put into combine performance when it comes time to draft a player?

Bryce Brown

Isnt he the kid that tried to go play pro in the canadian league after turning down playing for Lane Kiffin at Tennessee ?

"I hate it! It looks like a stickup at 7-Eleven. Five guys standing there with their hands in the air."

Norm Sloan

"We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."

He is that guy, although it sounds like he didn’t actually go to the CFL.

I'll be watching

Fans seem to place way more importance on it than most NFL scouts do (especially now with Al Davis gone), but I still find it interesting to watch.

I wish they spent less time on the 40, and more time on the individual drills they run for the various positions. If you watch closely you can tell a lot about the athleticism of a player.

Watching the mirror drill for the O-lineman gives you a nice look at the feet/hips of a lineman, often giving a good idea of who is moving to guard and who might stay at tackle. The backpedal + turn-and-run drill along with the W drill gives a great look at the balance, hips, and technique of the DBs. Etc.

I will watch as long as I do not have to work

side note:

where can I find red zone stats?
time in the red zone, average starting spot on the field, red zone scoring% field goal/td?

I would say leaving college without the degree was a poorer career choice
Declaring for the draft might have been a poor career choice by guys like Wyoming RB Alvester Alexander, Texas RB Jamison Berryhill, Kansas State RB Bryce Brown, Minnesota TE Tiree Eure, Syracuse WR Dorian Graham, Boston College DE/OLB Max Holloway, Miami WR Aldarius Johnson, Tulsa WR Damaris Johnson, Purdue guard Ken Plue, and Auburn QB Barrett Trotter.

Oh nm... He plead guilty to embezzlement and was suspended most of the year

That’s why he gets no invite. He probably now goes undrafted but would be an awesome guy to look at as a KR/PR and receiver out of the backfield if we don’t bring Ginn back.

09/01/11 – Prosecutors have charged suspended Tulsa wide receiver Damaris Johnson with one count of felony embezzlement. According to online court records, an arrest warrant also was issued Wednesday for Johnson, the NCAA all-purpose yardage record-holder. Johnson was questioned last week after his girlfriend, Chamon Jones, was arrested on an embezzlement complaint. Police say that Jones, who works at a local Macy’s, sold more than $1,500 worth of merchandise to Johnson for just under $13 on one occasion. Officers also alleged that Jones charged Johnson 34 cents for merchandise totaling $1,283. Head football coach Bill Blankenship last week suspended Johnson indefinitely. Court records didn’t indicate if Johnson had retained an attorney. Tulsa opens the season Saturday at top-ranked Oklahoma. – AP Sports

“Johnson is also the NCAA’s career record-holder with 3,417 kickoff return yards. Last season, he had 872 yards receiving, 560 rushing, 904 yards on kickoff returns and scored 13 touchdowns.”

“In 2010, Johnson set the NCAA record for all-purpose yards (7,796) and career kickoff return yards (3,417). For his career, he had 2,746 receiving yards and 1,062 rushing yards. "

I'll watch all of the Combine on NFL Network, but not for specific times, et. al., but rather for the "other" stuff ...

First, I agree that football players should be graded as football players, not as high jumpers or long jumpers or weight lifters. However, I do think that there are things to be learned from the Combine …

I like to see how competitive a guy is … does he go all out … or not? Does he like to compete? What does his attitude seem to be? Is this just a lark for him or is he trying to do his best?

I think that the single most important aspect of the Combine for the teams is probably the interviews (which of course we are not privy to) … they can get a good read on all the other stuff (football ability, speed, playing weaknesses, et. al.) by watching game film … but you don’t really get a “feel” for the guy until you’ve meet him face-to-face and have had an opportunity to talk with him. While you don’t need to be there to learn what the Wonderlic scores are, I think that it’s important to have a general feel for how smart each guy really is … understanding and executing game plans in the NFL is dramatically different that at the collegiate level.

Finally … if you’re not on the golf course, what the hell else do you do on a weekday if you’re retired?

I may have watched too much PAC-12 football this year

but Juron Criner just seems like a playmaker. I’m not sure how he’ll measure out at the combine (ESPN has him listed at 6-4 but he looks smaller) but he was able to make plays on everything thrown in his direction. He’s not an amazing physical specimen but he kind of fits the mold of a Hakeem Nicks type, a guy who goes after the ball.

He made a ton of plays on badly under thrown and inaccurate passes (which kind of matches up with our current QB deficiency) and he has pretty good moves after the catch. If he’s on the board I’d love to see the Niners grab him.

Demario Davis

If you havent got a chance to look at this kid from Arkansas State I highly recommend checking his tape on YouTube. He has very fluid hips for a LB and has the rare combination of speed and power. He would be an instant special teams ace and could develop into a high caliber LB

I don’t think he expects to be drafted. More putting his name out there in case someone wants to take a chance on him, since he wasn’t planning on playing next season.
