Dashon Goldson on 95.7 The Game: "They [49ers] Want Me Back"
49ers Free Safety Dashon Goldson appeared on "The Rise Guys" show on 95.7FM The Game. Check out the audio, especially the part early on where Goldson, a free agent, says he's sure the 49ers want him back. He goes on to say they've expressed how much they want him back.
Ok, so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Goldson had a good year and was a playmaker. Of course the 49ers want him back. The other side of the coin is that telling the world how much San Francisco wants him back could raise his price tag to other teams...and then raise it with the 49ers, too.
If teams feel the 49ers are going to be aggressive in trying to retain Goldson, they'll have to offer more to sweeten the deal. After all, he is part of the NFL's top defense (arguably) and has played his whole career in SF with most of these same guys. Goldson and Donte Whitner are among the NFL's best safety duo and the two are said to be great friends.
Once the 49ers get wind that the price has been raised, they'll have to counter in some way, shape, or form. Of course, the 49ers could franchise Goldson, and it's looking like they may have to if they don't want to get into a bidding war on a mega deal. Bottom line is that either way it serves to line Goldson's pockets.
The only question that may remain is: Will Goldson be the same player after a multi-year contract?
Only time will tell.

Franchise him
Goldson is inconsistent. If he has a good year next year, then we throw him a multi-year and get him payed. But one good season after multiple blundered seasons isn’t really enough for us to break the bank over.

just keep franchising him until he has a bad season, he will want too much money

You can't do that.
You can’t franchise a player more than twice. And even if you could, it would make the organization look bad to other players.
do it twice then let him go

Multiple blundered seasons? How so?
He’s been a starter for only 3 seasons. He had a good year in ’09. And last year was bad, obviously. But what people seem to forget or ignore, I think most people just ignore it, is that he dealt with painful foot injuries all season.
Franchise Tag
At ~$6.4 this year, is there any way the Niners don’t use it on Dashon? He wants Eric Weddle money which I think is around $8mil/year and I’m not sure I see the Niners offering quite that.
What
was the reported deal that we offered him last year? Wasn’t it around 4-5 years at $5m/year?
5yrs/$25M
don’t think many of us have an issue with his hitting and he did a good job getting picks this year, but he takes some bad angles sometimes and he goes for the big hit at times when just wrapping a guy up is the better choice. franchise him and have someone ready to step in next year.
also, there are 51 safeties on the market this season (if i counted barrows list correctly). bet a few of those guys are looking for weddle money.

That's still a good offer
as long as it isn’t all guaranteed. I doubt Goldson would take it now though. Franchising him seems like a better solution and avoids the downside inconsistency risk we saw in years prior.

too lazy to look it up
But this seems like the same song that we heard from him last year.. Along with alot of emo tweets about it. Granted he had a good year, and I want him back to keep our d consistent, but I don’t see teams beatin the doors down tryin to sign him up.. Just like last year.

My opinion...
Give him the tag regardless and give him a slight boost from what you offered him last year. He is going to want to be the highest paid safety in the league most likely, and some lame-brain team will pay him that much or very close to it. Make it the non-exclusive tag so that if someone wants to bid on him, we get draft day riches in return.
After that, draft Markelle Martin or George Iloka and make sure you use them early and often on nickel and sub packages to get ’em experience because they are probably starters in year 2.
I agree, franchise him and draft a safety for 2013 to start. I too like martin & Iloka.

I think it's safe to assume he won't be making more than $6.2million from the 9ers this year...
if they can’t agree on a 5yr 25-30million contract, he’ll get franchised and they’ll deal w/ him next seaon.
Hopefully they deal him this year.

Lol, this guy is all about the money, I understand players wanting money, but he is going to base it off of what another player gets, not taking into consideration what a huge liability he can be. I wouldn’t even tag him, not until I see what other safeties hit the market there are a few Is rather have.

Defensively these guys get it.... they are a part of something special....
Not necessarily the best/most talented individual players out there but I think together they really do compliment each other. Now there are those that may go elsewhere to cash in on their success here; (See Franklin in New Orleans) but I think they’ll find it hard to duplicate it bc it’s a mixture of scheme and the aforementioned selfless attitude they have on defense, which IMHO starts with no. 52.
Bring back Mr. Goldson, Rogers and Brooks. Let’s see this thing through but of course if they really want to be back it’ll show in how much they sign for. True they can probably get more elsewhere but just knowing this team was one WR away from a freaking SUPER BOWL will motivate these guys to really ask themselves WHY do they play the game. Like I said they can go get their money elsewhere like Franklin did last year but it’s up to them to show what means the most to them. Regardless, the millions they make on the field will be more than what most fans will ever make in their lifetime but if they really want to make this work and see it through they’ll work w/ the team towards the ultimate goal.

Hope - and indeed do believe you're right. You make lotsa' sense
Team chemistry, cohesiveness and coming within an eyelash of the Super Bowl on a team that is evolving every day by every day. Throw in Ted Ginn Jr’s move very early on of “giving back” money to stay on board (which you can’t expect very many others to do – but). Until proven wrong, I do believe this team, and quite a few players are gonna surprise us in more ways than we can count – including dedication to the cause and effort. We shall see.
Stanford Routt
any interest? He got a bunch of money from the Raiders and now released.
Niners could sell him ala Carlos Rogers.
Routt would be a good no. 2 CB.

Brown is a good #2.
Routt only knows how to play man, that’s all the Raiders do. So he wouldn’t work in our defense. He also lead the league in pass interference penalties with like 10.
Inconsistency and money are never arguments I am going to win
He is three times the player of Antrel Rolle but will only get 75% of that money, on some personal level that has sting. I do think the 49ers and him will come to an agreement on a multi-year deal in the mid $5M range.
I do think it’s a copout to complain about inconsistency at the FS position. The job at FS is to guess right. Are put in space with three options put in front of you and can only commit to one each pass play. Darren Sharper was a very good FS but his season to season stats varied to a high degree. Goldson out of 3 campaigns has put up big numbers twice, which IMO makes him an upper tier FS because the majority can’t manage to put one big season. Yet its not fair to ask for that every season, there has only been one Ed Reed.
what about td’s given up and completion % against?

by HUNGRY HUNTER on Feb 9, 2012 4:48 PM PST up reply actions
How do you judge that for a FS?
On every pass play the OC is sending at least 2 people in your zone and the QB is trained to throw it to other guy you are not covering.
where did walter football get this from then?
Of the safeties who have played 800-plus snaps this year, he’s surrendered the eighth-highest completion percentage. He allowed four touchdowns this year (tied for fifth among safeties) despite the amazing front seven he has in front of him.
is there a ranking of completion % somewhere?

I've seen this quote in a couple places
From several different people.
The problem is that PFF cautions that their own grading of secondary play, especially when it comes to linebackers and safeties, has a large amount of built in inaccuracy due to both the network coverage and difficulty in determining the coverage assignments. So in their own words …..
( When assigning blame ) Because of the inherent issues with the statistics mentioned above we just go for the simple approach and take the closest player when the ball is thrown
So there you go. Closest guy to the throw.
Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.
He probably has one interceprion off of a good qb his qhole career, maybe two.

It should be noted that Barrows said the 49ers felt the front 7 was largely responsible for most success by the secondary this year
