Alex Smith, 49ers 'Working Out The Details', According To Reports

Stay connected for news and updates

The fairly dry soap opera that has been the 49ers contract negotiations with Alex Smith may be approaching the final act if reports are true. According to the local CBS channel, Alex Smith told CBS5's Kim Coyle that reports of his demands for a five year contract false and that he's happy with the three-year deal offer by the 49ers. Smith told Coyles that he and agent Tom Condon are simply working out the details. This was apparently further discussed on the local news last night at 11:30pm, but with my move tomorrow I've actually cancelled my cable and unplugged my TV, so no news for me.

There has been plenty of rumor and commentary on this contract negotiation, but if this is an accurate description of events, it is possible all of the last few days worth of reports on the negotiations were just a little bit over the top. Until a contract is reported I suppose we'll have to wait and see, but it would seem like things might be wrapping up sooner rather than later. Ideally this will get done before 1:00pm PT on Tuesday so the 49ers will know what kind of cap space they have to pursue additional free agents.
