I know you guys discussed Perrish Cox a lot in the initial signing thread, but I think you need to take a second look. I've linked a great article below (yes I know it's Fox Sports, but just give it a chance ok?). However, this guy's story also strikes a chord with me on a personal level. I'll share a bit more about that after the jump.
In my humble opinion, I think this guy is going to turn out to be a great addition to our team. From the interviews I've seen he really seems like a genuinely good kid. Whether he was guilty or not, he seems to have repented and is determined to do right from here on out.
Personally, I made some mistakes when I was younger, and it was a long time before I could shake the shadow of those. While I never did anything illegal, I'm sure there are people who would look at what I did and call me a disgusting person who didn't deserve a second chance. Going down the path I was on, I should have ended up dead or in jail. However, I had some really great people in my life, and I did get a second chance (through a bit of a miracle actually). I've since dedicated my life to working with young people and helping them to be the best they can be both as individuals and as members of society.
Fast forward to the present: I've been working with kids for about seven years and my life has been completely transformed. I couldn't possibly put it all down here, but suffice it to say, I've had the privilege of working with some awesome kids and helping them and seeing them grow in tremendous ways. I've worked with orphans in gang territory in Mexico, youth in gang ravaged communities in California, kids at summer camps, kids at church, and kids in the performing arts. I'm actually currently in the process of launching a non-profit youth theatre group to really meet the need for a healthy, positive program in my area. (There are a lot of great programs around here, but almost all of them either subtly or blatantly encourage kids to compromise their standards and beliefs to get ahead.) I'm broke and barely scraping by at the moment, but I'm the happiest person alive. Back when I was going through that dark time, I saw no future for myself, I really didn't deserve any kind of a good future. Heck, if you'd told me back then that I would go on to bless the lives of young people, I would have laughed in your face. Yet here I am.
So what am I saying? I'm just saying let's give this guy a chance. It sounds like the Niners really did their due diligence on him, and they've been right so far. He has all the physical talent and the instincts to be a star (highlights here) and he could really help our team. But more importantly, our team could really help him. I'd love to see him spend some time with Alex Boone for example. Just my $0.2.
