Apparently Alex Smith Watch is getting ready to join the pantheon of "Watches" we've had here at Niners Nation. We're heading into the evening of day two of free agency and the 49ers QB remains unsigned. There are all sorts of possible explanations, but until he signs somewhere or news breaks of something, we really won't know what's going on.
In an ideal world, maybe he is waiting to see what the team needs for wide receivers under the salary cap. In a less than ideal world, the two sides are struggling to close certain gaps in guaranteed money. None of us will know for sure, so we are forced to sit and wait.
The 49ers will remain busy heading into tomorrow's third day of free agency. Chaz Schilens has remained in town but is expected to leave for New Jersey to chat with the Jets tomorrow. Mario Manningham is making his way to town tomorrow as he continues his on-going free agency tour. Finally, the 49ers are reportedly looking to chat with Eddie Royal in the coming days. He is heading over to San Diego and the 49ers would look to bring him in after that.
It really comes down to how quickly a team can close the deal. The Buffalo Bills have been trying to close Mario Williams but have been unable to do so. If you don't get a deal done before a guy leaves town, the odds of landing him do not improve. When the 49ers get Mario Manningham to town tomorrow, it could simply come down to the bucks. Laurent Robinson landed a 5 year, $32.5 million contract. Will Manningham accept anything less than that? I'd imagine not.
