The 49ers have climbed into the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, which likely means a weekend strapped to Twitter. The latest rumors have the Broncos offering a five year, $90 million contract to Manning, which might officially set the market in the stratosphere. Bud Adams seems to be willing to do anything for Peyton Manning (heck, he might rename his team the Tennessee Mannings if that's what it takes) so it could come down to what the 49ers have to offer.
Amidst all this, the 49ers still have plenty of other business to consider. Their search for a wide receiver may be taking a hit with Mario Mannigham reportedly close to a deal with the St. Louis Rams (or maybe not now). I know there is mixed reaction to Manningham, but it would still be one more wide receiver off the market if this happens. The 49ers have had several receivers in for discussions, but given some of the contracts handed out lately for less than #1 receivers, it makes a certain amount of sense not to overspend on guys that just aren't necessarily worth it.
At the same time, if the team is able to add a healthy Peyton Manning, maybe that alters the plans for wide receivers. Find a basic veteran that's further down the depth chart and then spend a high pick on a receiver. It is an interesting conundrum with one free agency move potentially drastically affecting another.
With all of these posts mentioning Manning, I'll try and include links to all our Manning posts so you can follow the discussion and specific reports and analysis we have:
