Yes, this is a business first. We all know this. I believe the more in depth question is," what have the 49ers done for Alex Smith". At 20 years old they threw him in at the halfway point behind Tim Rattay. He had a horrendous rookie outing. His best reciever was who knows? TE Eric Johnson. They had a crappy O-Line also. They nearly killed his career, truth be told. Mike Nolan questioning his toughness as he needed surgery to repair damage done from having an awful O-Line. Jimmy Raye, and Singletary, than Mike Johnson. Not to mention allowing Mike Martz to come in with his hand picked BUM J.T. O'Sullivan 20+ fumbles. Now he finally got some chemistry with Josh Morgan, and what did they do? Let him walk. His first playoff experience, who were his WRs, with Delanie Walker, Ted Ginn, and Kyle Williams battling injuries? Joe Hastings, Brett Swain, and Crabtree. They even let Braylon Edwards walk. They ruined his chances at a Super Bowl in all reality. The 49ers OWE Alex Smith better than they're giving him. Sign him, get some rookies in the draft. Get a solid RG, and lets finish what we started.
49ers 2005 WRs include Otis Amey, Arnaz Battle Rasheed Marshall, Jonhny Morton, Brandon Lloyd, and Jason McAddley.TEs Billy Bajema, Terry SJones, and Brian Jennings.PLEASE REMEMBER We released Eric Johnson,to the NO Saints later. He was the top TE in Receptions for a couple years. Would have been good with V.D.
49ers 2006 WRs:Taylor Jacobs, Brian Gilmore, Arnaz Battle, Brandon Williams, and Antonio Bryant
TE:Vernon Davis. He wasn't very productive in his rookie season. However, Alex Smith, and Frank Gore had Career highs this year. It took Alex Smith 5 years to play at this level again.
It is worth noting, Norv Turner had Alex Smith and Frank Gore playing at a high level this year. One could only speculate what the possibilities were had we kept Norv instead of Mike Nolan.
Long story short, Alex has suffered near career ending injuries due to lack of O-Line or WRs. He has faught to return every year. Most QBs would have left after the whole J.T. O'Sullivan, and Shaun Hill slap in the face.
Alex is finally looking good, and developing his confidence. He would now have Moss, Crabtree, Manningham, (should have Ted Ginn) and I still believe Kyle Williams is a great talent.(NO ST EVER!) and we have a solid core on the O-Line. I have faith we will plug the hole at RG, and add another rookie WR prospect to learn under Moss. Maybe this Hill kid, or even Alshon Jeffery. WE ARE LOCKED AND LOADED FINALLY! And Alex is in limbo...More disrespect. I AM ON RECORD SAYING IT TO THE ENTIRE NINERS NATION. SIGN ALEX SMITH. HE IS OUR BEST OPTION FOR A DYNASTY. Peyton Manning is asking to break the bank based off his past success. If he's even healthy, he still has to get readjusted to playing in the NFL, and learning a new system. I a smell BIG MISTAKE HERE FOLKS.
