I find it quite amazing, in the events that have transpired over the past few weeks, we as 49er fans seem to leave out a viable option in our QB fiasco. Everyone keeps mentioning Smith, Manning and Kaepernack and what the various scenarios could or would entail.
Enter Scott Tolzien, a late free agent signing, at the end of preseason. We picked him up for the display he had orchestrated in San Diego. Why is he not a viable option should Alex not sign with us?
I believe Alex will sign and be a 49er for his career as long as Harbaugh is his HC. However, to think we are left with one QB option and the feeling like we need to bring in a ringer such as Tebow seems quite foolish to me. We have a pair of young QB's that may or may not perform well. We have seen glimpses of Kaep and in my honest opinion, did not feel all warm and fuzzy when he stepped on the field. Granted he is young and inexperienced but I feel Tolzien, in his pre-season last year, was more commanding on the field than Kaep.
Don't mistake my endearing support for Tolzien for a rant against Kaep. Just keep an open mind for a kid that entered the league as an unsigned FA and we picked him up when he was cut from SD before the season began. There is no need for Tebow and the ensuing media circus when we have Kaep, Tolzien, and hopefully Smith.
I believe Alex has something to prove and he will! I am extremely hopeful of what he will do with a full preseason camp with Harbaugh and the additions to the WR position the FO has made. We have a great team and I believe that if we don't re-sign Smith we will be in great shape to continue winning with Kaep and Tolzien...which one should be the starter?
