The San Francisco 49ers got a little crazy yesterday evening as they officially took care of a pair of transactions in signing QB Josh Johnson and re-signing Ted Ginn Jr. The moves involved a pair of players connected to the 49ers, but both moves sort of came out of the blue.
The 49ers had reportedly spoken with Josh Johnson earlier in the week, but that was also before they announced the re-signing of QB Alex Smith. I suppose we shouldn't be stunned by the move, but given that the team was content with Alex Smith and two rookies, this does strike me as a bit of a surprise. I'm happy with the addition, but it still just caught me off guard.
The re-signing of Ted Ginn came out of nowhere in the sense that Ginn seemed prepared to move on in his quest for more work in the passing game. After some visits he now finds himself back in San Francisco on a one-year deal. I'm ecstatic he is back, but again, still caught me off guard.
The 49ers let Blake Costanzo and Adam Snyder walk, but otherwise the 49ers brought back last year's squad, while adding in some additional talent with Moss, Manningham, Cartwright and Cox. The 49ers do have a question mark at guard, depending on how they feel about Daniel Kilgore, and of course they have some depth holes to fill, particularly at safety. However, this team is looking to come back in 2012 stronger than ever. They don't play games on paper, but I'm still quite excited.
