Over the course of three months following the Super Bowl, NFL teams will visit with a whole host of players. The 49ers will run a local Pro Day in Santa Clara, but then they will chat with a variety of top prospects. Teams can host 30 players before the draft, and also host their local Pro Day. The visits allow them to get to know these players, but really do little to guarantee they will draft a given player.
Nonetheless, it is interesting to note players the 49ers front office hosts, as it might at least provide some hints about their potential plans by position. Matt Barrows is reporting that league sources indicated the 49ers will host Virginia Tech running back David Wilson on April 11 and 12. I've posted some video after the jump, and you can check out the Mocking The Draft scouting report.
The 49ers have Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter as their primary running backs, but the long term plan at the position remains to be seen. Hunter is a small guy, but it is also possible the 49ers will look at a committee approach, as we have seen more and more frequently.
Even if the 49ers do not draft a guy like Wilson, will we see the team make an aggressive draft decision at the running back position?
