NFL Mock Draft Database: Stephen Hill, Coby Fleener Emerge At The Top

We are now one month away from the 2012 NFL Draft and our 49ers mock draft database continues to evolve. The 49ers position down near the bottom of the first round makes it much more difficult to project out than when they have been in the top 10 or 15 picks in recent years. Add in the fact that the team has few glaring needs in the starting lineup and it makes it that much more difficult.

In the most recent database, we have ten separate players with only one mention, and we have three more players with only a pair of mentions. While 30 mock drafts remains relatively limited, I think this shows plenty about the uncertainty of the pick.

The biggest gainer this week is Coby Fleener, which is not a surprise. He put together a strong Pro Day this past week, which has his stock climbing in mock drafts. I would be a little bit surprised if he fell to 30 at this point, particularly with the draft process really coming to a close at this point. Aside from getting arrested or injured between now and April 26, his stock should remain high.

Stephen Hill equaled Fleener with seven mentions, and the wide receiver position remains the top position on the board. The 49ers have solidified the wide receiver position for 2012, but there are still some issues that can be addressed. The team does not have a lot of long-term solutions at the position at this point. Michael Crabtree is signed through 2014, Manningham is signed through 2013 and Moss for one year. A wide receiver might not necessarily be the most practical pick in the first round this year, but it could be of considerable long term value.

On the other hand, the 49ers wide receiver corps, while filled with plenty of upside, still has enough question marks, that maybe the team does want to try and add another game-breaker early in the draft. Randy Moss is basically an empty slate at this point. He could be the Moss of a few years back, or he could be the 35-year old Moss and on his last legs. We won't know until the summer at the earliest. Mario Manningham is an addition with considerable upside, but again, there have been enough inconsistencies that we don't know what to expect of him. The draft provides an opportunity to further solidify the depth at the position.
