Last month, before NFL free agency got going, Wes Hanson took some time to break down the 49ers 2012 schedule of opponents as it related to free agency. Each team had various needs that would need to be addressed this offseason and free agency was the first opportunity to handle that.
Although free agency won't be ending anytime soon, most of the more significant roster additions are complete as we head into the final week of March. There will still be some pertinent additions, but I would imagine most of those will actually happen once we get into July and closer to training camp. The 49ers best example of that would be Takeo Spikes first signing with the team back in 2008. This season, a guy like OG Leonard Davis will be a late addition to a team looking for help on the line.
Starting on Wednesday, Wes will look back at what each of the 49ers 13 opponents did over the last couple weeks and then look ahead to the upcoming draft. For now though, I thought I'd provide a quick rundown of the various additions and subtractions each of the 13 teams has undergone over the last two weeks. I used ESPN's Free Agency tracker as they provide drop-down menus allowing to sort by new and old team.
The list after the jump is likely not quite 100% accurate because I noticed they do not list the Perrish Cox signing for the 49ers because he was out of the league all last year. If you see a notable omission, please post something in the comments and I'll add any such players to the list.
In looking over the teams, it seems like the Bears, Patriots and Jets have had some solid offseasons to date. The Jets addition of Tim Tebow could be one of the most intriguing additions of the offseason. Rex Ryan has indicated Tebow could get as many as 20 snaps per game on offense. I'm not a big Mark Sanchez fan, but having Sanchez and Tebow could be quite the experiment. It could very well not work out, but the creativity provides some upside, particularly down in the red zone.
Anybody jump out at you as a clear winner in free agency thus far?
