The NFL announced compensatory picks for the draft today and the 49ers, as expected, received none. The short answer as to why is this:
The team lost five free-agents in 2011 and gained five free-agents in 2011. I'd argue we got even better guys than we let-go, so I'm glad we didn't LOSE a pick (not possible, just sayin).
The players who left in FA last year were:
NT Aubrayo Franklin (Saints)
OLB Manny Lawson (Bengals)
C David Baas (Giants)
LB Takeo Spikes (Chargers)
OLB Travis LaBoy (Chargers)
The additions in free-agency were:
CB Carlos Rogers
SS Donte Whitner
K David Akers
C Jonathan Goodwin
WR Braylon Edwards
It would have been very nice to have some comp picks, even though you can't trade them, because there is a lot of talent that will fall into the later rounds of this draft, specifically at receiver and offensive line...two positions of need.
Oh well, "In Harbaalke we trust!"
