NFL Mock Draft 2012: Considering The OG Situation

Stay connected for news and updates

One player that has been floating around near the 49ers picks in recent days has been Wisconsin offensive guard Kevin Zeitler. He has remained below David DeCastro and Cordy Glenn (Glenn has played both OG and OT), but would seem to be settling in as a late first or early second round option. He has some struggled at times in pass protection, but could prove good enough to be a long term option at right guard.

SB Nation's most recent NFL mock draft had Zeitler going one spot ahead of the 49ers with the 29th overall pick. Mock drafts are a crap-shoot for most of the picks, and that far down can be as accurate as throwing darts against a board. Nonetheless, with these kinds of projections, we can at least get some ideas as to who might be around with that later round pick. On a related note, the SB Nation NFL bloggers have begun the annual blogger mock draft. I'll keep you all in the loop on that as the 49ers pick approaches.

I have been consistently thinking Daniel Kilgore is the guy the 49ers are looking to for 2012. I still am leaning towards that, but if the right guy is there for them at No. 30 (or maybe in the second round), what's to stop them from going guard there and then working with Kilgore as the backup swing interior lineman and future center? Given the rookie salary cap and the fact that Kilgore was a late round pick, we are not talking about significant financial commitments that would cripple the team. If the team is not going to add a veteran like Leonard Davis (still a possibility), a high pick on a guard could very well be the choice.

How would you address the guard position moving forward?
