49ers Hosted G Deuce Lutui Earlier This Week

The San Francisco 49ers have used up most of their salary cap space, but there is still a modest amount of room if they feel the need to add a free agent or two at the veteran minimum. Two of the most likely positions for such contracts would be safety and guard. Both positions lack much in the way of depth, and the 49ers likely will address the positions in the draft.

In the meantime, they continue to look at some possible veterans at the guard position. A week after hosting Leonard Davis, the 49ers hosted Cardinals free agent Deuce Lutui. Last year, Lutui signed a two-year deal with the Bengals, but then subsequently failed his physical when he weighed in at 381 pounds. He returned to Arizona on a one-year deal and is now shopping his services after getting snaps in a single game in 2011.

It would be rather surprising if the 49ers did not sign a veteran guard between now and the end of July, but at this point, the market is weak enough that the team can take their time. Although Daniel Kilgore appears to be the favorite to start the year at right guard, a favorable option in the draft could provide the kind of competition that changes that up.
