A couple days ago Dylan posted a poll to help us come up with a top five big board looking at the wide receiver position in next month's NFL Draft. Now that two days have passed, I've closed down the voting after 473 votes. In a bit of a surprise, wide receiver Stephen Hill claimed the top spot, ahead of often highly touted Michael Floyd of Notre Dame. Floyd finished with the most first place votes at 201, but Hill made up for it with significantly more second and third place votes. It is probably easy to get caught up in the hubbub surrounding Hill's strong Combine performance.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones finished just outside the top five in sixth place. The lowest total vote to receive a first place vote was Illinois' A.J. Jenkins. Head after the jump to view the full results.
South Carolina wide receiver Alshon Jeffery finished in fifth place, with 19 first place votes. Until recently, Jeffery was having a tough draft season. There were questions of weight heading into the Combine, and while he did measure in at 216 pounds, there were concerns it was simply a last second crash loss that we often see from boxers. More importantly, Jeffery elected to not take part in any drills at the Combine, saving them for his Pro Day earlier today.
Jeffery put together a very solid Pro Day, weighing in at 216 pounds and running a solid enough (albeit not spectacular) 40-yard dash in the high 4.4 to low 4.5 range. It sounds like he impressed folks, which will likely end his draft stock slide.
As Jeffery's draft stock potentially starts to climb, the question now is whether teams should be wary of this "contract push" from Jeffery. He was reported to have struggled with weight issues in college, although he denied the problem and did show up at a solid enough weight at the Combine. The question is whether he will continue to perform after he gets the draft pay day. Maybe he will, but there is always some concern once a player gets paid.
How do you view Alshon Jeffery in light of a fairly strong Pro Day performance?
