As draft day looms, the speculation on which player the 49ers will pick at #30 intensifies.
Prospects heavily linked to the 49ers such as Fleener and Hill, I believe will be gone before they pick. I've also heard alot about Jenkins possibly falling to the 49ers, but I think a team like the Lions will take a chance on him. Pure talent alone, he should be a top-15 pick.
Therefore,
I have the 49ers selecting: Harrison Smith, S, Notre Dame
Baalke stresses the importance of picking the 'best player available' on the board. Smith, graded an 84.5/100 by nfl.com is an ultra-athletic, big and smart safety. He is extremely reliable and effective in run support, which comes from the ability to read and react to plays on a quick twitch off the snap.
The 49ers will have to come face-to-face with Gronk/Hernandez/Graham this season, a 6'2 guy like Smith would be a huge asset to our secondary. With the 49ers thin on safety depth and Goldson holding out, this pick seems to be the ideal scenario. Filling a need and picking the 'best player available'.
This pick may surprise many, but with Baalke being 'confident' his guy will be available at #30 and Smith projected to be a late 1st, early 2nd rounder, could Smith be the 'draft crush' Baalke is so in love with?
