Crazy... Can't believe it myself other than to say: I DID predict this MONTHS ago... Predicted they'd "at least kick the tires" on a deal like this. Nothing finalized yet but... Holy-oh-my-god...(!!!) Can you believe it? I'm nearly in a state-of-shock... This is all just completely unbelievable.
The deal isn't completed yet... The league office hasn't signed-off and isn't expected to do so until tomorrow mid-morning at the earliest (like 11AM EST so that's what, 8AM PST). But all the particulars seem to be in place, and I'll report what I've heard after the jump...
So apparently the Colts will be sending the 49ers the #1-pick overall in the 2012 draft -- along with Dwight Freeney -- in exchange for the 49ers 30th selection in the 1st Round, MLB Patrick Willis, TE Vernon Davis, DE/DT Justin Smith, starting QB Alex Smith, 2nd-year QB Colin Kaepernick and CB Chris Culliver. Additionally, the 49ers will be giving the Colts their 3rd Round selection and their 4th Round selection in the 2012 Draft (picks 92 and 125), as well as their 1st and 2nd Round picks in 2013, 1st and 3rd Round picks in 2014, 1st and 2nd Round picks in 2015, 1st and 3rd Round Picks in 2016, 1st and 4th Round picks in 2017, 1st Round picks in 2018, 2019 and 2020, 2nd Round picks in 2021 and 2022, a 3rd Round pick in 2023, and Conditional 1st Round Picks again in 2024 and 2025 (they become 2nd Round Picks if Luck doesn't lead the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game 8 times between 2014 and 223).
Obviously, the 49ers intend to reunite Jim Harbaugh with Andrew Luck... I would be SHOCKED if they made this deal and selected RG3, though he was recruited heavily by Harbaugh while he was at Stanford. So assuming Luck is selected #1 overall by the 49ers, then the deal shakes down like this:
49ers Get
Andrew Luck
Dwight Freeney
Colts Get
Patrick Willis
Vernon Davis
Justin Smith
Alex Smith
Colin Kaepernick
Chris Culliver
2012 1st Round Pick (#30)
2012 3rd Round Pick (#92)
2012 4th Round Pick (#125)
2013 1st Round Pick
2013 2nd Round Pick
2014 1st Round Pick
2014 3rd Round Pick
2015 1st Round Pick
2015 2ndRound Pick
2016 1st Round Pick
2016 3rd Round Pick
2017 1st Round Pick
2017 4th Round Pick
2018 1st Round Pick
2019 1st Round Pick
2020 1st Round Pick
2021 2nd Round Pick
2022 2nd Round Pick
2023 3rd Round Pick
2024 1st Round Pick ***
2025 1st Round Pick ****
(*** Conditional Pick -- becomes 2nd Round Pick if Luck doesn't lead 49ers to 8 NFC Championship games between 2014-2023)
(**** Conditional Pick -- becomes 2nd Round Pick if Luck doesn't lead 49ers to 8 NFC Championship games between 2014-2024)
So yeah... That's quite a price-tag. I've not seen anything like it before, but then again, I'm not a "Draft" guy. It's quite possible I'm forgetting some similarly huge deal. But Elway as I recall... He was sent to the Broncos for their #1 pick OT Chris Hinton and their #1 pick in '84. I can't remember for sure, but I think former Purdue Boilermaker QB Mark Hermann was thrown into the deal and sent to the Colts as well.
So other than that, I can't think of any other deal that touches this right here. And Baalke and Harbaugh have CLEARLY thrown down the gauntlet and put their collective noodles on the ol' chopping block w/this one. Truly. Noodles, along w/both their big fat hairy beanbags, right into the ol' fryer. So only time will tell, but...
...I think it's the smart move. Andrew Luck's a once-in-a-lifetime player. I'm just really, really excited that our franchise has the men in place to dare and risk so much to achieve greatness.
