Hello my fellow Niners Nation faithful!
WR has been one of the hot topic positions the last few months here on Niner Nation. I'm excited to see how our revamped WR corps performs this year. Perhaps newcomers Moss and Manningham make a strong positive impact this year. Perhaps Crabtree and Williams continue to improve. What of the long term future at WR?
I don't believe there's a WR on the team currently under contract beyond 2014. That (among other reasons) is why most of us expect the team to draft a WR later this month. We've seen a lot of names tossed around like: Hill, Jones, Quick, Jeffrey, Sanu, Toon, etc. But there's a receiver that I've seen mentioned quite a bit lately over on Mocking The Draft. His name is Dale Moss. They had a front page story on him today, which I've posted after the jump.
Moss only played one season of college football because of his love of basketball, but in that 1 year he had some decent production (61 receptions, 949 yards, 6 touchdowns). Moss is developmental WR who's likely to go somewhere in the mid to late rounds of the draft. He didn't look out of place in the practices for the East/West Shrine game and caught 2 passes in the game itself.
He wasn't invited to the combine, but he had some strong measurables at his school's pro day. He's got good size at 6'3" and 213lbs. He ran a 4.45 second 40-yard dash, with some scouts clocking him at 4.38. Moss also posted a 41.5" vertical jump, a 10'10" broad jump, and a 3-cone drill time of 6.32 seconds.
Moss has some good football bloodlines too. His cousin Bobby Newcome played in the NFL, and his uncle is Heisman Trophy winner Jonny Rogers.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco49ers were in attendance at his pro day at South DakotaState. If that school's name rings a bell it's because our own Trent Baalke was the strength and conditioning coach there before he became an NFL scout. Think he might have some contacts there with some good info on Moss? I wouldn't doubt it.
Some fun tidbits from his interview with Mocking The Draft. His favorite NFL team when he was growing up was the San Francisco 49ers (because of Jerry Rice), and he says his game is most like current 49er (for the time being) Randy Moss.
I'm not going to say that Dale Moss will be drafted by the 49ers for sure, but given some of these connections/coincidences, as well as what I'm hearing and reading, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. What do you readers at Niners Nation think?
