It has been written many times over that the 49ers will not be as good next year because they cannot possibly replicate their turnover differential. In truth, they can because last year’s performance was because they were very good defensively and very cautious offensively. It is reasonable to believe they could do the same in 2012. But would it be better if they didn’t?
On defense, they could easily reproduce or improve on last year’s performance. If they do not, however, it would not be the end of the world. Keep in mind that, while the niner’s D caused many turnovers last year, they did not score a ton of points. They did consistently give the offense good field position, which the ST would have done anyway. Therefore, if they do not produce the turnovers like last year, it would not necessarily make the niners a lesser team.
On offense, they will probably fumble the ball around the same pace as last season. Hopefully, Alex will throw more picks this year, though. If he does, it would mean that he is attempting more passes, throwing more TD passes, and taking greater command of the offense. Many believe that more passing attempts by Mr. Smith would indeed lead to more interceptions but not increase his TD total. I disagree. Why? Look at the weapons he has this year. He will throw for more yards, TD’s, and picks. A smaller turnover differential could be a good thing.
