Carroll is a SF native - 1951. His Wiki profile states Carroll was small - had to have a doctor note to play football. (Ergo - He may suffer from a Little Man syndrome. He attended; played for; and began coaching at UOP - Univ of the Pacific for those unfamiliar with Cali's colleges. UOP is a very small school located in Stockton, CA. Carroll had two NFL head coaching jobs before landing at USC. While coaching the NY Jets, Carroll was immortalized by Dan Marion's "Fake Spike" play. The Jets lost their last 5 games afterwards and Carroll was canned. Carrol inherited Parcell's SB NE Patriots team. He trashed that team in 3 years.
Next Carroll coached at USC. Carroll was successful - until Coach Harbaugh landed at Stanford and USC was found violating NCAA rules for recruiting players. That finding soiled Carroll’s successes. Carroll thought Stanford ran up the score and trashed fans rushed the field in 2009. After the game, Carroll verbally attacked Harbaugh - "What's your deal?" Harbaugh repeated his words back. Carroll remained irked and an un-abiding dislike for Harbaugh has grown.
When Harbaugh found success with an unknown DE OLB - Aldon Smith, "Me Too" Rah-Rah Carroll drafted a WV DE, Bruce Irvin, with copious encounters with the law - the jury remains out on Carroll's Copy Cat pick. Harbaugh took a bad team to the playoffs and nearly the SB in his first year. Carroll's NFL record that spans 6 years and three teams contains 2 playoff loses. His first was a Parcell’s gimme, his last appearance was a musical chairs entry in a very poor division - 2010 = Rnd 1 loss.
Previously, Carroll's player selection and Rah-Rah philosophy has netted him little success. Comparatively, Harbaugh hit the NFL running - similar to his success at Stanford where he revived a lagging franchise and earned his player's respect. Carroll's player selections have always netted attention. The consensus view of Carroll's 2012 draft was an F grade. Carroll chose not to resign Matt Hasselback - who went to the Titans. Carroll signed GB's backup QB Matt Flynn to replace Tavaris Jackson (whom Carroll preferred over Hasselback) this year. Jackson's pro play is notably poor. Carroll obviously thinks Flynn, who replaced Aaron Rogers twice = one loss, and a Silly good performance over a very bad Viking squad, is the second coming of Dave Kreig? Again, the jury remains out. IF Flynn will start, and how well he will play once NFL Def. co-ordinators know his weaknesses.
Me Too Rah-Rah Carroll can't control his emotions. It's evident on the field, in his coaching philosophy and unwillingness to set player standards - preferring to "encourage" and... Rah-Rah. Recently, Carroll signed SF reject WR Braylon Edwards. Edwards couldn't impress Harbaugh, but his playing on Harbaugh's team is apparently enough for Carroll. Carroll undoubtably thinks he will prove to Harbaugh who's the better coach and hopes to use Edwards as another piece - alongside Irvin and DUI Marshawn Lynch - to make his point.
Carroll is looking obsessed with Jim Harbaugh and not in a good way. Maybe it's Carroll's small stature, Harbaugh's successes - against him and in general, and/or the What's your deal? response. Harbaugh goes thru his days oblivious to another NFL coach who likely has pictures of him in his office for motivational purposes. It's a very odd, and unhealthy Man-Crush that does not bode well for Pete. Another loss to Harbaugh may be the tipping point for Carroll. We will learn that outcome soon - that will be Interesting.
