"San Francisco Won't Strike Gold in 2012"

15
"From what I can tell, the only real argument against the fate seemingly awaiting the Niners is the presence of Jim Harbaugh. Perhaps, Niners fans seem to hope, the roster was really a 13-win team all along, just one held back by the bumbling misanthropy of Mike Singletary. I can understand where they're coming from. I've said on the record that I believe the Singletary-to-Harbaugh swap to be the biggest head coaching improvement an NFL team has ever made. Perhaps those Niners really were much better than they played." Grantland piece from the same writer, Bill Barnwell, that wrote the over/under piece on the niners winning 9 games in 2012. I remember it being discussed thoroughly, but in this piece he articulates many bits about why the Niners being a trendy pick for the Super Bowl does not reflect the objective facts about last year's team and recent history -- despite his affinity for coach Harbaugh, who he calls, along with Peyton and Bellicheck, the best tactician in the NFL. He touches on Smith's interception rate, the defense's turnover rate, the non-dispositive nature of W-L, field positon, Harbaugh's impact, amongst other facts, observations, and analyses. I and some of the NN posters have been saying some of this to varying degrees with varying degrees of receptiveness. But records are wiped clean every year, and W-L are not, especially with the type of team we have, particularly quality predictors of future outcomes.
