Prediction time? I think we know what's coming. Mandatory Credit: Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE
Last season, we put together an opening game prediction post, to give folks a chance to guess what the first play would be for the 49ers in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks. The first play ended up being an Alex Smith scramble for six yards on a pass play that saw nobody able to get open. It does not appear that anybody got the prediction correct.
I thought we'd bring this back for 2012, and maybe even do it every Saturday leading up to the 49ers game. This year though, we'll expand it a little bit more. You still will predict the first offensive play (please be as specific as you can), but we'll also call for predictions of which 49ers defensive player will get the first tackle, and which 49ers player will score the first touchdown.
I've got some basic ground rules after the jump, as well as my own predictions.
Offensive Play Prediction Guidelines: Try to be as specific as you can on what you think the 49ers' first offensive play will be. Don't just say "pass play" or "run play". Instead, say "Smith throws a slant route to Crabtree for 7 yards" or "Frank Gore runs right side and picks up three yards." You can also predict incompletions, interceptions, fumbles, touchdowns, and even a safety if you really think that will happen on the first offensive play!
Defensive Tackle Prediction Guidelines: Predicting the first defensive play is much more obscure, so this one is a simpler category -- project who you think will make the team's first tackle that does not come on special teams or a returned interception/fumble.
First Touchdown Against Green Bay: If you do not think the 49ers will score a touchdown, then say "no touchdowns" as your answer. Otherwise, predict how you think the 49ers' first offensive touchdown will be scored, along with the person(s) who will score. You can predict it to be on offense, defense, or special teams. If you predict a passing touchdown, name both the quarterback and the receiver.
Here is the template you can copy+paste for your comments:
First Offensive Play:
First Defensive Tackle:
Here are my predictions...
First Offensive Play: RB Frank Gore gets the handoff, left side, for a gain of five yards.
First Defensive Tackle: CB Chris Culliver
First Touchdown: RB Frank Gore gets the carry down near the goal line for a four-yard touchdown run.
