49ers Vs. Packers: David Akers Caps Field Goal With 63-Yard Field Goal

Stay connected for news and updates

Holy crap! The San Francisco 49ers head into the second half of their matchup with the Green Bay Packers holding a 16-7 lead thanks to a combination of timely offense, strong defense and great special teams. The offense is improved but the other two parts of the equation from last year are continuing strong. Aaron Rodgers led the Packers on a touchdown drive, but otherwise they have been contained fairly well. Some shoddy officiating on both sides has certainly helped.

But the real story now comes from "The Captain" (a friend's nickname for him) David Akers! The 49ers closed the half by lining up for a 63-yard field goal and Akers knocked it off the cross-bar and in for three points. It was absolutely perfect and a great way to end the half.

If you head after the jump (with audio!), you can enjoy some video of Akers record-setting field goal. Technically he tied the record, but the previous holders kicked them at elevation in Denver, in a dome, or with a flat shoe (the original record-holder with a busted foot). Akers did it outside at Lambeau. He is the mother-[site decorum] man.
