September 11, 2011; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula (left) celebrates with defensive tackle Justin Smith (94) during the second quarter against the Seattle Seahawks at Candlestick Park. The 49ers defeated - Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports
CBS Sports is reporting Jim Tomsula might be a candidate for some head coach openings. We take a look at the possibilities.
CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora put together a run down of the various GM/coach options for each team, and apparently league sources think Tom Gamble could look to 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula as a head coaching option. Gamble is the 49ers director of player personnel and is a favorite to land a GM position, with the Jaguars, Jets and Chargers among the teams to ask the 49ers for permission to interview him.
Much of our site discussion has centered on Greg Roman's candidacy, but Tomsula makes sense as a head coach candidate. He has primarily been a defensive line coach, but he gained some coordinator and head coaching experience in NFL Europe. Tomsula has "only" been coaching since 1998, but something about him strikes me as head coaching material. He commands the respect of players, and with the right staff supporting him, I have a hunch he could be an excellent head coach. And of course, he has a 1-0 career record as an NFL head coach, so there's always that!
We'll continue to keep an eye out on coaching rumors, since the 49ers' assistants are likely to be prominently mentioned. Teams have until Sunday to get an interview with them, so we'll know fairly quickly how significant some of the opportunities are looking.
