Jaguars fire head coach Mike Mularkey

Phil Sears-US PRESSWIRE

The Jacksonville Jaguars fired head coach Mike Mularkey. We take a look at how this impacts the 49ers.

In a move that should surprise nobody, the Jacksonville Jaguars have fired head coach Mike Mularkey. The team did not fire him immediately after the season because they first wanted to hire a general manager. That GM turned out to be Atlanta Falcons director of player personnel David Caldwell. It did not take long for Caldwell to decide Mularkey was not his guy.

This could impact the 49ers because of Greg Roman. The 49ers offensive coordinator was a teammate and roommate of Caldwell back in college, so the relationship is there. It remains to be seen if Caldwell will decide Roman is the guy, and it will be some time before we know anything for certain. There are limitations on interviewing Roman at this point because of the playoffs. Assistants on playoff teams with byes could interview for head coach jobs the week of their bye. However, once the bye passed, Roman became unavailable for interviews until the 49ers are eliminated, or the bye week leading up to the Super Bowl, if the 49ers make the Super Bowl.

There was no word on whether Roman spoke with the Jaguars during the 49ers bye week, and Roman would not address it in his weekly press conference on Tuesday. He said he was focused on the Packers. Additionally, Roman was asked about Caldwell, given their relationship. Roman said that he was not really talking to Caldwell right now because he was in Atlanta and the 49ers might end up facing the Falcons in the NFC Championship Game.

The Jaguars will now begin their coach search process. If Caldwell wants Greg Roman, he will still have to satisfy the Rooney Rule in the interview process. If the 49ers can remain alive in the playoffs beyond this weekend, Caldwell will have some time to interview candidates and see who else might be on the market. In the meantime, let the speculation flow!
