Tom Gamble's efforts to land a general manager position appear to be focusing in on the New York Jets job. Earlier today, Adam Schefter reported the Jacksonville Jaguars had narrowed their list to a pair of finalists: Falcons director of player personnel Dave Caldwell and Cardinals director of player personnel Steve Keim. Gamble had interviewed for the job, but according to Schefter, he turned down a second interview with the Jaguars so he could focus on the Jets job.
I am a little bit surprised by this given the fact that Rex Ryan is reportedly staying in place as Jets head coach. I would imagine a GM candidate would want an opportunity to have more of a say in the head coach position. Of course, Gamble could be perfectly content with Ryan, figuring he is a capable coach but just needs better players.
If Gamble lands the Jets job, this would seem to mean he would not be bringing Greg Roman or Jim Tomsula with him. That does not mean they won't land jobs, as there are still going to be options. As Matt Maiocco pointed out, Roman and David Caldwell were teammates and roommates in college. Of course, if Roman doesn't interview by tomorrow, the Jaguars would be stuck waiting until the 49ers are eliminated, or the week of the Super Bowl bye (preferably the latter!).
