Strong safety Donte Whitner left the game early in the fourth quarter, replaced by C.J. Spillman. At first it seemed like a blowout substitution. However, Whitner returned to the game, only to depart again shortly after. The 49ers eventually declared him out for the remainder of the game with a knee injury. Whitner did not go back to the locker room during the game, but rather had ice on his knee while seated on the bench.
Free safety Eric Reid departed with a lower leg injury later in the fourth quarter. It looked like he either rolled his ankle, or had someone fall on it. He eventually got up and left the field with help from an assistant, but without a significant limp. He later returned to the game, and had a sizable hit at one point. He seemed to limp a little later, but there was nothing else to come from that.
After the game, Matt Maiocco tweeted out this picture from Instagram, stating that both injuries did not seem too serious. Given that the 49ers were in control of the game, it made the decision to bench Whitner that much easier a call. The team has a lengthy plane trip to London, so any extra rest has to be welcome.
