The B.J. Daniels fiasco, left me some questions regarding the working of the waiver wire, and I was hoping someone more knowledgable than I could help me out.
My understanding is that a player is on waivers for 24 hours. Teams submit a claim for players on waivers if they want to claim them off waivers. The player would become a free agent if nobody claimed him off waivers. I think all of this is correct, but please correct me if wrong.
Does the waiver priority mirror the order of the previous draft? If so, does this change at any time, or is the waiver priority static until the end of the next season?
Does a player have any say in who claims them off waivers, or is it like the draft in that the player is stuck with whoever claims him?
If a player is claimed off of waivers, are the terms of his contract with his new team the same as the terms of the contract with the team that waived him (i.e. there are no contract issues to be negotiated regarding the signing)?
Under the CBA, can teams put poison pills in contracts to help ensure a player clears waivers (e.g. escalators or de-escalators that would make it more expensive for any team other than the team that waived him to assume that player's contract)?
My understanding is that if a player is claimed off another team's practice squad, then the player has to stay on the new team's 53 man roster for like 3 weeks. Is this correct? If so, is there a similar requirement for players that are claimed off waivers? For free agents?
Any help would be appreciated.
