I believe the only reason why we are a run team because during the "Smith Era" we simply did not have a good passing game…or one at all. Since we did not have a passing game, that forced us to frequently run the ball with Gore.
We now have a talented qb with an ability to throw(sorry Smith), yet we're still lacking in our passing game, not because our qb sucks, but simply because we are a "run team". We are almost dead last in passing...and our opponents and a lot of teams have about 100+ more passing attempts than we do. Kaep has a very high YPA, but he ranks 23rd in passing yards. Doesn't sound too bad till you take a look and realize every qb below him hasn't played a full season yet. Link is here if you want to check it out
I understand our receiving core hasn't been great due to injuries, but we've had Boldin and VD. Not everyone in the league has great WRs either. Take a look at San Diego and their 1-2 receivers are Allen and Woodhead. The Seahawks don't even have a clear #1 WR.
I believe that once we start passing more and have an equilibrium for our run-pass then we will be such a more better team. We have the tools, yet refuse to touch it. We aren't expanding our offense.
It's like this... If you were working at McDonalds for $10/hr and you receive a new manager that offers you $15/hr instead, but you insist not to take it because you you're satisfied $10/hr rate and reach half way in the middle at $12.
What I’m trying to say is that we have a great passing game and should utilize it as much as we do with our rushing game. There's no reason why we couldn't have a top rushing AND PASSING game in the league.
Also to add, Oregon and Standford will be a great game tonight...and since I'm talking about college ball...I hope we get Watkins in next years draft... at least Mike Evans. That guy needs to stop climbing up the draft charts because we need to draft him at 31. It's either Watkins, Evans, or Lee. No one else matters.
