Jim Harbaugh rejected USC coaching offer earlier this year, per Schefter

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

Amid reports Texas has Jim Harbaugh on their short list, one report indicates the 49ers head coach already rejected an offer from USC.

Amidst the silly season of college football coaching rumors, we have some interesting, positive news. According to Adam Schefter, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh rejected an offer from USC earlier this year. The Trojans fired head coach Lane Kiffin on September 28 and hired Steve Sarkisian on December 2. If Schefter is accurate, there is your likely timeframe for when USC approached Jim Harbaugh.

Harbaugh has been mentioned in connection with the Texas job, but Schefter's tweet stated that he was expected to remain with the 49ers. This is not a shocking revelation, but it is always nice to hear. On Wednesday, Jim Harbaugh met with the media and the first question was about the Texas job. As expected, Harbaugh simply said he never talks about any job other than the one he has. It's not a denial, but we're never going to get specific responses like that.

Mack Brown remains the head coach at Texas, so until he actually resigns (or is fired) and someone is hired, Harbaugh's name will likely remain mixed up in this. At some point the 49ers will figure out a contract extension with Jim Harbaugh. If the 49ers win the Super Bowl this year, I could see Harbaugh attempting to get it done this year. He's currently reported to be third in the NFC West in salary, so that is something he'll probably want rectified sooner rather than later.

Anything is possible when it comes to coaches coming and going, but it's hard to see Jim Harbaugh departing the 49ers before the team has won a Super Bowl. There are benefits to be had at both coaching levels, but the NFL remains the top of the mountain when it comes to football. He likely could make some seriously crazy at Texas (Longhorn Network money is good), but I seriously doubt Jed York would low-ball him. There would be some negotiating, but York has proven he is plenty willing to spend money. We've seen the team investing in their own players, but we've also seen the team invest heavily in their new stadium, technological infrastructure for the organization and more. Jim Harbaugh will get his extension.
