The silver lining of 2012 Draft

I'm a long time reader of Niners Nation, but this is my first attempt at a fan post. A recent article by Jason Hurley got me thinking about the contract extensions for Kaep, Crab, Aldon, and Iupati. The consensus seems to be that the 49ers will only be able to extend 3 of the 4. Iupati seems to be the current odd man out unless Crab goes diva on us again.

With the bust that is the 2012 draft, I believe that Baalke can use that to his advantage when strategically planning for contract extensions. Aldon was a first round pick so the team has an optional 5th year and with his struggles off the field, it may be wise to see how he does through this entire off season before extending him early in the 2014 season. Also, with Kaep not performing at the level Jaworski proclaimed, there needs to be more of a body of work before paying him top 10 QB dollars. I feel the 49ers would be wise to lock up Iupati and Crab ASAP, and use the missing 2012 draft to slot in Kaep and/or Aldon's dollars.

I don't have the list of 2014 free agents in front of me, and i'm sure that Jason Hurley, Modesto Matt, or EBNF can work out the potential scenarios better than I did. Who's got it better than us???

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.
