NFL power rankings, Week 14: 49ers prepare for showdown with Seahawks

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers creep up a little bit in Week 14 NFL power rankings following their solid win over the Rams. It's good timing too as they face the consensus top team in the power rankings.

The San Francisco 49ers continue their slow creep up NFL power rankings, courtesy of their win over the St. Louis Rams. The Rams are firmly entrenched in the NFC West cellar, although unlike in years past, that cellar is not quite so awful. The Rams now sit at 5-7, which would be good enough for third place in every other division in the league. The NFC West suddenly finds itself with a serious spark.

The 49ers now head into preparations for the Seahawks. If there was any question before, it has been answered fairly well that the Seahawks are the consensus top team in the league. I'm sure some 49ers fans will disagree, but the Seahawks dismantling of the Saints has them locked in at the top of power rankings.

The 49ers have solid wins thus far, but they have only one really good win thus far. They beat the Cardinals before they got on their recently snapped hot streak, but I'm talking more about the season-opening win over the Packers. Green Bay isn't looking good now, but that's due to the absence of Aaron Rodgers. It still qualifies as a good win given the context back in September.

That means this weekend, the 49ers have a chance to build some serious confidence. A win over the Seahawks at home is a lot different than a win over them up in Seattle, but it would still be a confidence builder. The team was thoroughly beaten at home by the Indianapolis Colts, and couldn't quite make it happen against the Panthers. Beating the Seahawks would give this team the kind of boost it needs to continue on its playoff path. I don't know if it would be enough to beat the Seahawks at the CLink in January, but I'd be a lot more comfortable after a win than a loss.
