Fooch's Update: USC has made the move official.
The San Francisco 49ers have begun their preparations for the Green Bay Packers, but they may also have to prepare for a departure from their coaching staff. FootballScoop.com is reporting co-offensive line coach Tim Drevno is going to leave the 49ers after their season ends to become the offensive line coach for Steve Sarkisian at USC. I asked one of SB Nation's college guys about Football Scoop, and he said they're as solid as anybody on college-related stuff.
Drevno joined the 49ers when Jim Harbaugh took over in 2011. Drevno has worked with Jim Harbaugh since Harbaugh's days at University of San Diego. Drevno was the offensive coordinator and OL coach at San Diego. He then joined Harbaugh at Stanford, where he served as tight ends coach in 2007-08 and OL coach in 2009 and 2010. When Harbaugh joined the 49ers, he retained Mike Solari as offensive line coach, but added Drevno as a co-OL coach.
This is a lateral move (at best), but Kyle Bonagura had one bit of speculation:
@BetterRivals Purely speculation, but he is from down there. Understandable if someone just wants to be home.— Kyle Bonagura (@KyleBonagura) December 31, 2013
I'm sure some word will leak out at some point. Jim Harbaugh will likely meet with the media on Wednesday, and I'm sure he'll get a question about Drevno's departure following the season. We'll see if the 49ers stick with Solari exclusively, or if they add somebody else to assist in the offensive line duties.
I went back through transcripts from press conferences, and virtually every time Tim Drevno was mentioned, Mike Solari was also mentioned. The one exception was when Jim Harbaugh was discussing the signing of Leonard Davis last year. He mentioned that Drevno was specifically working with Davis to get him up to speed.
Obviously Drevno is a good coach if Harbaugh has kept him around for close to a decade now, but we don't know a whole lot more about him. He always seemed a bit more under the radar than Solari. Grant Cohn did a piece on Solari that was quite solid, but I've never seen anything specific written on Drevno. 49ers.com does have a pair of videos featuring Drevno. He was mic'd up in training camp this season. He also took part in a "Coach 'Em up" segment in March 2012.
