NFL Combine 2013: Trent Baalke discusses 2012 Draft class

Thearon W. Henderson

49ers general manager Trent Baalke met with the media on Thursday at the NFL Combine. We take a look at some of his many comments, focusing on the 2012 Draft class first.

The NFL has descended upon Indianapolis, which means much of the free world is discussing this significant step toward the NFL Draft. After the Combine wraps up, players will have their Pro Days, and get additional chances to visit with teams and work out for them. However, this is one of the last times most of the NFL personnel people will be in one place at the same time.

The NFL has media availability for general managers and coaches, and the 49ers are getting theirs out of the way fairly early. GM Trent Baalke met the media at 7:15 a.m. PT and addressed a variety of topics. The 49ers will likely make the audio available later today, but in the meantime, there are plenty of folks tweeting about the press conferences. If you are on Twitter, I recommend following @justRVB, @mockingthedraft, @matthewfairburn and @jgarrisonSBN, all of whom are representing SB Nation this week at the Combine. Our own Trevor Woods will be there this weekend.

I'll post a link to the audio once it's available, but for now, I figured we'd open by looking at his comments about the 49ers 2012 Draft class.

This doesn't tell us a whole lot of much, other than a lot of what we probably should have expected to hear. The 49ers wide receiver depth struggled late in the season with injuries, but heading into the season, I think the team was fairly optimistic. And considering what we could have seen from Kyle Williams and Mario Manningham had they stayed healthy into the playoffs, I would have to agree.

Although most of the draft class sat most of the season, the biggest concern remains A.J. Jenkins. He received limited snaps, and struggled a decent amount in those snaps. It is waaaay too early to declare him a bust, but it is obvious that he has a lot of work to do this offseason. It sounds like he is either in Atlanta, or is on his way there this week. Whatever the case, much will be expected of him in the coming months of OTAs, minicamp and training camp.
