The wide receiver position is an odd one for the 49ers. The offense made big strides, and there is some quality talent on the roster, but injuries have left the team in a bit of a quandry. When healthy, a wide receiver corps of Michael Crabtree, Mario Manningham, Kyle Williams and A.J. Jenkins would seem to be a very respectable group. Even with Jenkins still trying to develop, the 49ers offense can do a lot with that group alongside Vernon Davis and their run game.
Unfortunately, injuries leave the 49ers wondering what to make of their receivers. Williams told me at the Super Bowl that he expects to be good to go for the start of training camp. He said he could be back for OTAs, but he and the trainers figure it is better to be cautious since there will still be plenty of time before games begin.
Manningham on the other end is looking at a late training camp return at best. He tore up his knee late in the season, leaving him in a tough spot. Adrian Peterson obviously came back for the start of the season, but he could very well be a freak of nature. I think the team will work Manningham back slowly, and we very well could see him start camp on the PUP list. We'll just have to wait and see how his rehab goes.
And of course, there's A.J. Jenkins. The 49ers rookie spent his first year trying to learn the pro game. The 49ers will need production from him in year two, but the question is whether they can expect enough to make up for their injury concerns elsewhere on the roster. I have to imagine the 49ers will add a receiver in this draft, but it's just a matter of where they make that addition.
Here is a rundown of the height, weight, arms and hand size of the wide receivers in attendance at the Combine. They will all hit the field for workouts on Sunday.
