Getting off the Draft for a minute: A few Technical Questions I have for the experts

I have some questions to ask that I have never know the answers to. Hoping some of you guys can explain why MY theory isn't allowed or isn't used.

1> This one has nagged me for YEARS (literally).

Here is what I think is accurate:A> 7 guys HAVE to line up on the line of scrimmage (the 5 O-line+ to to 'cover' the tackles). B> We have a QB somewhere behind the center.

So that leaves 3 guys who can line up anywhere behind the ball right? Whether it be 3 in the backfield or 3 'receivers' lined up off the line of scrimmage or whatever.

So my question is: For a receiver who is lined up covering the tackle, why on earth doesn't the CB or LB lined up against him just smack him straight into the turf at the snap? Is it illegal or something to just flatten the guy? As long as you don't 'hold' him why isn't it done? The guys lined up OFF the line of scrimmage re a whole other matter, since they have more time to 'ole' the defender.

2> How many guys can line up behind the O-line (ie inside the LT and RT but behind)? There are 4 players left to account for (5 line + 2 to 'cover') so can all 4 line up back there?

3> Assume VD is right next to Staley, like right on his hip. Can another player be lined up right behind the 2 of them, literally so he could touch them?

Thanks guys.
