Dashon Goldson reportedly agrees to deal with Bucs after 49ers do not offer contract

We look at some of the latest news surrounding free safety Dashon Goldson. The 49ers may have not even made him a contract offer.

Fooch's Note: Adam Schefter reporting Dashon Goldson has agreed to five year deal with the Bucs.

Fooch's Update: Deal is reportedly 5 years, $41.25 million

Mindi Bach is reporting that a league source informed her the San Francisco 49ers never offered a contract to free agent Dashon Goldson. Furthermore, they never even offered a framework on a contract. Goldson is apparently in the midst of contract negotiations with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Reports indicated he had several suitors, but it sounds like this deal with Tampa Bay could get done very soon.

Although some people will be surprised by this, if we look back at the last couple years, is it really all that surprising. The 49ers let him test free agency in 2011 before re-signing him to an inexpensive one year deal. There were reports the 49ers offered him a five year deal for $25 million, but I don't think even that was fully confirmed. Then, he put together a solid 2011 and played 2012 under the franchise tag.

Although Goldson has been a strong performer for the 49ers, the player-team relationship always seemed to be missing something. I don't know what exactly, but it did not seem like a relationship built for the long-term. Maybe it is the occasional undisciplined play of Goldson. Or maybe the 49ers felt he was never quite as good as some thought. I don't really know, but sometime seemed amiss the last two years.
