The league is so pass happy now, that the niners play their base mainly in the beginning of the game, and nickle and dime the rest of the time. Their "base" has become the minority against the teams that they will be challenged by the most next playoffs. So 3-4 is really their sub-package. The nickel is their bread and butter package, with needed emphasis on their dime too. They would gladly let their 3-4 group getting slighly weaker if they could make significantly improvements on their nickel and dime. They are no longer a true 3-4.
