49ers salary cap three days into NFL free agency

USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers have made one signing and two trades since the start of free agency. We break down the impact on the 49ers 2013 salary cap space.

Free agency is underway and the 49ers have gotten on the board with the addition of Glenn Dorsey. Although the 49ers have only signed one player, they have made several official moves over the last week. All of them impact the team's salary cap, which is naturally a frequent topic of conversation. So, lets take a look at the 49ers cap situation on day three of free agency.

The 49ers entered free agency at around $5.1 million under the cap. This number included their decision to tender Tramaine Brock with a 1-year $1.323 million RFA contract. He has not signed the contract yet, but it counts against the team's salary cap limit.

Here is a rundown of the 49ers recent transactions, and their expected impact on the salary cap.

Free agency began on Tuesday, but the day before, the 49ers announced a contract extension for NT Ian Williams. His deal is reported to be two years and worth $3.2 million. This is believed to include a $1 million signing bonus, along with another $1 million in guarantees. The deal is attached to his current deal, which was to expire after the 2013 season.

Once the new league began on Tuesday, the 49ers were able to make their two trades official. The first was the widely reported trade of Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs. We discussed the impact on the salary cap before, but just to clarify, this deal netted them $8.5 million in cap room. That would move the 49ers up to approximately $13.6 million in cap space.

The 49ers followed up the Alex Smith news by confirming the Anquan Boldin trade. He still has to pass a physical, but as it currently stands, the deal is more or less done. Boldin is slated to earn $6 million in 2013. There has been some chatter about the team looking at extending him to lower his cap number, but for now his $6 million figure leaves the 49ers at around $7.6 million under the cap.

The latest news last night had the 49ers signing Glenn Dorsey to a two year deal. Reports have the deal worth as much as $7 million with incentives. We don't have enough specifics at this point to know how it impacts the 49ers cap specifically.
