Nnamdi Asomugha rumors: 49ers could still be in it

Evan Habeeb-US PRESSWIRE

We take a look at the weekend news surrounding Nnamdi Asomugha, and where Nnamdi Watch stands.

The 49ers pursuit of Nnamdi Asomugha quieted down over the weekend, but I figured it was time for an update for people who spent their weekend doing something other than tracking 49ers news.

Over the weekend, Nnamdi headed off to New Orleans for a visit. It's noteworthy for two reasons. The first is that Rob Ryan is their defensive coordinator, and he was Nnamdi's defensive coordinator for a stretch in Oakland. The second is that head coach Sean Payton and GM Mickey Loomis were not in town for the meeting, as they had already left for Phoenix for the league meetings.

Although Nnamdi left San Francisco without a contract, Matt Maiocco is reporting the 49ers are still believed to be a "strong possibility" for Nnamdi. While we wait, are left to wonder how the dominos would fall with a Nnamdi signing. They currently have three "starting" cornerbacks in Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown and Chris Culliver. Do they release Rogers? Do they move Culliver to safety, a position he played up until his senior year at South Carolina?

For now, there does not appear to be a huge rush to get a deal done with Nnamdi. People are naturally impatient, but the 49ers took their time in 2011 and things worked out. That's not to say 2011 performance guarantees anything in 2013, but it is still worth noting as we wait for action.
