NFL draft compensatory picks 2013: 49ers get expected three picks

The NFL announced compensatory draft picks for the 2013 NFL Draft. We take a look at where the 49ers now stand in the upcoming draft.

The NFL announced the 2013 compensatory draft picks (PDF), and as expected the 49ers gained a fourth and two seventh round picks. The comp pick formula can be a bit complicated, but the Internet football community has grown in its ability to project the potential comp picks each year. For the 49ers, this year's picks reflect the losses of Blake Costanzo, Joshua Morgan and Madieu Williams, and the addition of Mario Manningham.

The addition of these comp picks gives the 49ers 14 picks in the NFL Draft. The 49ers match the Miami Dolphins 1997 haul of 14 picks, although as Eric Branch points out (via SI), the Dolphins did not exactly hit a home run with that draft. They did good work on Sam Madison and Jason Taylor, solidly with Derrick Rodgers, and that's about it. The rest of the picks were a mix of injuries, general busts and overall ineffectiveness.

The 49ers 2013 NFL Draft picks now stand as follows:

1. First round, No. 31 (No. 31 overall)
2. Second round, No. 2 (No. 34 overall): Kansas City Chiefs via Alex Smith trade
3. Second round, No. 31 (No. 61 overall)
