NFL free agents: 49ers do not expect Randy Moss back in 2013, according to PFT report

USA TODAY Sports

We take a look at the report that the 49ers do not plan on bringing Randy Moss back in 2013.

Pro Football Talk is reporting a league source informed the 49ers made it fairly clear at the NFL Combine that they would not look to bring back Randy Moss in 2013. While there has not been any specific discussion about Moss since the end of the Super Bowl, it is not exactly shocking.

Although praised for his contributions by Jim Harbaugh and Trent Baalke, Moss made it clear that while he was getting used to the role of being a bit more of a decoy, he did not particularly enjoy it. That does not mean Moss is expecting a bigger role in 2013 wherever he lands, but if a player isn't happy, it might be time to consider other options.

While Moss did not particularly enjoy being a decoy, he did a great job in that role. Even as the 49ers did not spend a lot of time looking his way, defenses still gave him a whole lot of respect. The cushion he was getting with decent regularity was rather surprising.

The 49ers will need to add some wide receiver help this offseason. Excluding free agents, the 49ers wide receiver corps currently includes Michael Crabtree, Mario Manningham, Kyle Williams, A.J. Jenkins, Chad Hall, Ricardo Lockette and the recently re-signed Joe Hastings.

Considering Manningham is unlikely to be back until late in training camp at best, and Williams is working on his own injury recovery, the 49ers are going to be adding wide receivers this offseason. The question now is where the impact players will come from. I imagine they add a receiver somewhere in the draft, and then at least one in free agency, but the specific strategy remains to be seen.
