Golden Nuggets: You down with QB3? Yeah, you know me!

It's never a good thing when your quarterback is tackling, or, Scott Tolzien feasts on the leg of a defenseless defender. - Kyle Terada-US PRESSWIRE

Sunday, March 24, 2013 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of 49ers links from around the web.

There are a couple of key concerns about our roster going forward. Primary concern is the free safety position and who will man it. Another big concern, one that hasn't gotten a lot of press during the offseason is the backup quarterback position. How far along is Scott Tolzien? Is he ready to assume the role of primary backup? Who is the third quarterback? I don't need an exact name, but a profile. Are we going to draft someone to develop alongside the other youngsters or does the staff bring in a veteran to provide some experienced reassurance? I personally want a veteran. It's obvious that Colin Kaepernick is the starter. I'd still like a quarterback with more experience than him on the roster to help him read defenses, teach him things. Maybe all of that doesn't matter when your coach played 15 years in the NFL. What do you guys think?

BASG has a story discussing this exact topic? Wow, I wonder what inspired my intro!!! After perusing the list of veteran quarterbacks to bring in, I may want to change my choice to drafting one. It's pretty grim out there, but we do need a third quarterback to hold the clipboard! | 49ers' search for a third QB will show how much they like Scott Tolzien (BASG)

Another question to be answered surround our return game. The team has taken great strides in the offseason to upgrade the special teams, which had fallen off from their marvellous 2011 campaign. Dan Skuta was brought in as the ace of the unit and Phil Dawson was signed to replace the fallen David Akers. But who will be returning kicks for us? | Ricardo Lockette could be 49ers next return specialist (Gin)

Some talk this offseason has surrounded who the 49ers will look to extend next. Matt Maiocco looks at the possibility of extending Michael Crabtree and other questions in his mailbag. | 49ers mailbag: Extension for Crabtree? (Maiocco)

Another hot topic is Nnamdi Asomugha and his potential landing spots. It appears the 49ers and the Saints are the front-runners. I don't think we get him without making a cut somewhere. | Nnamdi is still looking at Niners, Saints (PFT)

Mike Sando looks at the free agency period for the four NFC West teams. There are also links to every other division, thus every other team, in the league. | Eight in the box: FA winners or losers? (Sando)

Did you hear? There's been an updated valuing of the draft chart that has dominated draft thinking for the last 20 or so years. According to the old theorem, the 49ers have the 17th most draft points. According to the one some guy from Harvard did 2 years ago, the 49ers have the most draft capital. With the emphasis on rookies and their lower wages in recent years, it makes since to reevaluate. | About that old NFL draft-pick value chart (Sando)
