If we’re looking for a Kaepernick substitute, some things aren’t coachable. 6’5”, 230LB, runs "like a deer" doesn’t grow on trees. Experienced in the read-option, strong arm, high ceiling…..If he only had a quarterback-whisperer to show him the right way.
Obviously, he wasn’t ready for the NFL in 2006, let alone to be the leader and face of a franchise but he understands reality a lot better now. He’s been humbled, put in his place and in the process, dues have been paid and there’s still plenty in his tank. Unlike undrafted prospects, there’s a book on him and in the right system, his downsides could be coachable.
For a dirt-cheap, one-year contract, the pressure would be off to see if he could learn the details of a system he’s already had some success in. In a year (or less), we would know if he’s a Kaepernick substitute but his raw materials sure look like a close fit to me. Could be a real value for peanuts.
